Outlook

A cold front will cross the region tonight. It will bring winds and rain with it. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for high winds from 4 pm today to noon tomorrow. A copy is posted in the Hazardous Weather Segment.

LOCAL NEWS

A wind event last night knocked out power to over 300 Maconians last night. Duke Energy estimates electrical services will be restored to their customers by 2 pm this afternoon. Most of the people without power are in the Cullasaja and Cartoogechaye communities.

Today (Wind Advisory until noon)

Sunny with highs in the 40s and winds 15 to 20 mph from the northwest, gusting to 35 mph.

Tonight

MOstly clear with lows in the 20s and winds chills in the upper teens. Winds 10 to 15 mph from the north with gusts up to 30 mph. Winds will gradually die down to around 5 mph from the north by midnight.

Monday

Sunny with highs in the upper 40s in the higher elevations and the lower 50s in the lower elevations. Winds out of the southwest.

Monday Night

Partly cloudy, becoming mostly cloudy with lows ranging from the upper 20s to the lower 30s and winds out of the south.

Hazardous Weather

Macon County is currently under a Wind Advisory until noon.

…WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON EST SUNDAY…

* LOCATIONS…The mountains and higher foothills of Western North Carolina, plus Rabun and Habersham counties in Georgia.

* HAZARDS…Strong wind gusts.

* TIMING…Winds will increase across the high elevations through the late evening. After a cold front passes through the area around midnight, the strong winds are expected to expand into the lower elevations, with the strongest winds expected between midnight and sunrise Sunday.

* WINDS…Strong westerly to northwesterly winds are expected along and behind a cold front overnight into Sunday morning. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph appear likely in many valley locations tonight, while elevations above 3500 feet will see some gusts exceed 50 to 55 mph.

* IMPACTS…Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Wind Advisory means that wind gusts of 46 to 57 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult… especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
