Terror-warning loudspeakers rolled out across Melbourne’s CBD

A network of loudspeakers designed to warn people of emergencies such as terrorist attacks is being set up across Melbourne ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations
The roll-out comes as counter-terrorism experts from Australia and overseas converge on Melbourne for a forum on preventing terrorism, as authorities warn peak terror season is upon us.

Police Minister Lisa Neville said the Andrews government was setting up speakers at more than 90 key sites as part of its $10 million CBD security upgrade.
The speakers are in part a response to January’s Bourke Street tragedy, in which six people died when a man allegedly drove a car into the mall and mowed down pedestrians.

The speakers have already been installed across the city, with 65 sets already placed at locations including Federation Square, Bourke Street Mall, Flinders Street Station, the State Library and near the Town Hall.
Ms Neville said there would be a live test of the speakers at the State Library on December 28.
