Many years ago, John McCain was a POW in Hanoi.  In 2000, he was defeated by GW Bush in South Carolina.    In mid-2007, 9 he was dead in the water for the Republican nomination.      Eventually, he won the nomination.

Mitt Romney was a very successful businessman and son of George Romney, who ran for president in 1968.   Romney was also governor of Massachusetts.

At one point in the summer of 2008 , I was hoping for a McCain-Romney ticket.
