Not married at all

As you may know, NOM is in the midst of a tough fight in Georgia where we are working alongside allies to urge the legislature to enact protections for faith-based adoption agencies so that they may continue to help Georgia children and families without violating their faith beliefs.

Our work there has generated some media buzz among LGBT activists, who complain that our push for the right of faith-based adoption agencies to adopt out children only to a married husband and wife is somehow discriminatory to gay couples. But we make no apology for fighting in Georgia and across the country so that children can experience the love of a mother and a father in their lives.

Help Us Fight To Protect Children

A prominent homosexual journalist, Michelangelo Signorile, recently wrote in the Huffington Post that NOM’s work in Georgia is part of a nationwide plan we have to, “turn same-sex marriage into second-class marriage with a longer-term goal of overturning federal marriage rights for gays and lesbians entirely.”

Signorile is exactly right that NOM’s Strategic Plan includes a strong fight for the rights of religious adoption agencies to insist that adopted kids go to families where they will experience the love of a married mother and father. And he’s also right that we are determined to restore true marriage to our nation’s laws. But he’s wrong about turning same-sex ‘marriages’ into second class marriage. That’s because:

Same-sex ‘marriages’ are not marriages at all.

The fact of the matter is that marriage is intrinsically the union of one man and one woman. No matter what LGBT extremists, activist judges or the liberal media might say, that is what the institution is about. It’s been that way since the beginning of time, because marriage is ordered toward the procreative act of creating children and then providing the ideal environment for them to thrive with the unique contributions to their wellbeing provided by both a mother and a father.

Many in the media foolishly dismiss the idea that we can restore traditional marriage to our laws. They figure that since the US Supreme Court did the unthinkable with their illegitimate, anti-constitutional ruling in the Obergefell case, that gay marriage is a done deal. But people who think through the issues more deeply realize that this situation is not permanently ensconced in our laws, and can be changed.

NOM is determined to do just that — to fight to restore marriage. We may be just a single Supreme Court justice away from being able to do so.

It’s interesting to me that for a long time, many people on our side just assumed that we had won the battle to preserve marriage and they could focus on other things. After all, the federal Defense of Marriage Act had been enacted into law, and voters in dozens of states had put provisions into their state constitutions to protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman

Conventional wisdom was that marriage was won.

But some LGBT activists did not accept conventional wisdom. They organized and fought, often behind the scenes and often in the face of criticism that they were wasting time and resources on a lost cause. That criticism continued until one day the cause was not lost when the Supreme Court ruled their way.

Now conventional wisdom is that traditional marriage has been lost and we just have to accept the idea of ‘gay marriage.’ But conventional wisdom is wrong. Marriage is not lost and the redefinition of marriage has not been permanently won.
