Berkeley Commission Blames Victims for Leftist Political Thuggery

In a rigidly ideologically homogeneous system, bogus commissions can be counted on to reach whatever absurd conclusions reinforce the prevailing ideology. The University of California, Berkeley provides an example:

After the riots at Berkeley last year aimed at no-platforming conservative speech, the school set up a commission to write a report on what went wrong. The commission has released its report and, according to Politico, it blames the violence on conservative speakers who wanted to “incite” the far left to violence to make universities look bad.

The report concludes that Berkeley, infamous as one of the most ideologically intolerant locales outside of North Korea, “remains a tolerant campus.” It just doesn’t tolerate intolerance, by which they mean anyone who deviates by a hair’s breadth from radical left dogma.

A more outrageous example of blaming the victim would be hard to imagine. But I’m forgetting, the speakers who were silenced and the perceived conservatives who were physically assaulted aren’t the victims. The snowflake fascists are — at least, according to the commission’s report:

“Many Commission members are skeptical of these speakers’ commitment to anything other than the pursuit of wealth and fame through the instigation of anger, fear, and vengefulness in their hard-right constituency. Speech of this kind is hard to defend, especially in light of the acute distress it caused (and was intended to cause) to staff and students, many of whom felt threatened and targeted by the speakers and by the outside groups financing their appearances.”

The poor whimpering babies.

If a totalitarian system like North Korea’s is imposed in America, there will be no shortage of heel-clicking apparatchiks eager to staff it. Academia is lousy with apt candidates.
