A new heaven and a new earth: Genesis and the New Covenant

Is the work of God in the New Covenant really leading up to the climax of a literal new outer space with new stars and a new globe with no ocean on it? It’s time to rethink all of this, folks. . . .

The phrase “heaven and earth” is used throughout Scripture. God especially employs the summary of the created order as a description of his covenant order.

While God often calls upon “heaven and earth” as witnesses, he also uses the phrase in the “new creation” motif. Passages such as Isaiah 65:17-25; Isa. 61; 2 Peter 3; and Revelation 21 all draw upon this language to make radical applications.

Understanding how Scripture uses its own creation imagery and language has profound meaning for how we understand the New Covenant, prophecy, and the future.

Too many preachers take these things literally and wind up with a belief in a literal New Jerusalem as a 1,000-mile high pyramid! Will we really have a globe with such a pointy clown hat on it???
