Divorce Sudanese Style

I am no fan of CNN, but to their credit, they have published this story of an 11-year-old girl in Sudan trying to obtain a divorce from her 38-year-old adult husband. In addition, they have published the story of a 19-year-old Sudanese girl facing death for killing her abusive 35-year-old husband, who she was forced to marry at 15.

“In Sudan, child marriage has been woven into the fabric of the country’s culture, driven by tradition and poverty. More than a third of girls there are married before their 18th birthday, according to a 2017 UNICEF report, and 12% are wed before they reach 15. Under the country’s 1991 Personal Status Law of Muslims, children can marry when they reach “maturity,” which is only 10 years old. It’s the lowest legal age of marriage in Africa.”

In Iran, the age when a girl becomes a woman under their law is 9. Last week, I attended a talk by Iranian-born apostate Annie Cyrus. She was married off when she was not yet 15, was repeatedly beaten and raped by her husband, arrested for letting her hair show and being in a taxi alone with the driver, and lashed about 100 times while in jail.  She escaped to Turkey and now lives (under fatwas) in the US.

Then there is also CNN’s report of a teenage girl facing a death sentence for killing her abusive (rapist) adult husband.
