Key Vote NO on the House Amendment to the National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act, S. 1182

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote NO on the House Amendment to the National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act, S. 1182, offered by Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.). This amendment would reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which currently expires July 31, until November 30.

The amendment would provide for a clean reauthorization without any reforms, for the seventh time in the span of ten months. This is more of the same pattern seen all too often in Congress — Legislators unwilling to make even modest reforms to fiscally irresponsible, flawed programs. With NFIP, only 3 of the 41 reauthorizations in the past 20 years have included any reforms.

With this reauthorization, Congress is looking at a program that is $25 billion in debt largely due to its perverse incentives such as underpriced coverage and its barriers to private sector innovation in the space, and deciding that it does not need even modest reform. This is yet another denial of reality for the sake of political expediency to avoid a lapse in the program.

The reforms often discussed for the program, including those put forth in the bipartisan NFIP Extension and Enhanced Consumer and Community Protection Act, H.R. 6402, are minor, yet leadership in the House has elected to ignore even these common sense recommendations and instead completely turn a blind eye to the clear problems with NFIP. Pushing through yet another reauthorization of NFIP with no reforms is dangerous to at-risk homeowners and to taxpayers.

FreedomWorks will count the votes for the House Amendment to the National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act, S. 1182, on our 2018 Congressional Scorecard and reserves the right to score votes for amendments not listed above. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of the House and Senate who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely,

Adam Brandon, President, FreedomWorks
