DeSantis Welcomes Amazon to Florida

Earlier this month, a deal between Amazon and New York City fell through, which would have resulted in Amazon building a second headquarters in the Big Apple. New York Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opposed the move, and Amazon concluded by backing out of the deal last week.

Governor DeSantis is now responding by arguing that Amazon is welcomed in the sunshine state. He added that New York’s political climate caused the company to leave and that the political climate in Florida is much better than the one in New York.

He emphasized that not only does Florida not have a state income tax, but the state is also more welcoming to big companies.

DeSantis explained that “I think if you look at what just happened with Amazon in New York City, there is a hostility to some of these companies — political hostility — that I think mattered more than a lot of the other things that they were talking about.I know that there’s a debate about tax incentives, this, that, but I think it was beyond that.”

The Governor added that “this hostility to companies like Amazon, a lot of the financial institutions are consistently demagogued, and I just think they’re paying a price for doing that.”

He concluded by detailing that he believes “Florida’s a place where you can do well without having to face some of the political blowback that you see in other parts of the country. And so our posture here is one of welcoming, not one of demagoguery and hostility.”

Many cities have been courting Amazon since they announced that they would be opening a second headquarters, and there is no word on where they will be relocating.

In response to Amazon pulling out of the deal, a giant digital billboard has popped up in Times Square, saying “Thanks for Nothing, AOC!”

The billboard argues that she contributed to “25,000 lost NYC jobs,” “$4 billion in lost wages” and “$12 billion in lost economic activity for NY.”
