Rep. Waltz Votes in Favor of Avoiding a Government Shutdown

A deal has been made to ensure that the government does not shut down again, but President Trump is still reported to declare a national emergency today to secure additional funding for the wall.

In response to the deal that will avert another government shutdown, Congressman Michael Waltz weighed in on his vote in favor of the deal.

In a statement, Waltz commented that “As a veteran, I know first-hand the importance of getting things done, and my community sent me to Washington to do just that. This bill keeps the government open and provides more resources needed to secure our border. I will keep fighting to make sure Congress fully supports the President’s call for a long-term solution to both fully securing our borders and legal immigration reform.”

Waltz also added that “Following the longest shut down in history, I will not let partisan games put the families of our Coast Guard and those who protect our country at risk. But this fight isn’t over until the President gets every dollar needed for the barriers and other technologies the Customs and Border Patrol have requested to keep criminals, drugs, and human traffickers from crossing our porous border.”

This concludes a long and heated battle between Republicans, Democrats and the President concerning border security and trying to ensure that another government shutdown doesn’t occur. The last government shutdown, at 35 days, is the longest shutdown in American history, but the President has been vocal about the need to strengthen border security.

However, with the President set to declare a national emergency to secure more funding for the wall, the signing of the funding bill and the paperwork for the executive order are set to take place today around 10 a.m. according to a White House official.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the announcement that President Trump would follow through with those actions.
