Germany: Two Dead in Attack on Halle Synagogue

Today, two gunmen attacked a Jewish synagogue on Yom Kippur and shot two people, one man and one woman, to death before fleeing the scene. It is reported that one man is in custody.

There are indications that this may be a neo-Nazi style attack in that one of the attackers reportedly used “far-right” slurs and a nearby Turkish kebab shop was also reportedly shot at. No information has been released on the identity of the man in custody.

Scouring the German news sites, it appears that the get away vehicle was a rental car. The gunmen attempted unsuccessfully to break into the synagogue and a hand grenade was tossed into the adjacent Jewish cemetery. The situation is obviously fluid at this point and there may be conflicting reports.

Regardless of who the perpetrators are, this is another sad day in Germany, a country that needs no reminders on acts of anti-Semitism.

*Update: The Independent is reporting that one of the attackers had posted anti-Jewish, anti-immigration screeds online prior to the attack.
