Higher Education Budget Subcommittee

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

For the past several weeks, I’ve been a part of working towards a state budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. It’s a daunting challenge but one I welcomed and was honored Chairman Bannister charged me with this session.

A few years ago, I was appointed to the House Ways and Means Committee by then Speaker Jay Lucas. Since that time, I’ve tried to learn as much as I can and have chaired legislative subcommittees but never a budget subcommittee until this year.

I’m working with Higher Education in our state alongside Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter (D) and Representative Bill Taylor (R). We’re supported with first-class support from Julia Foster, Stacey Morris and Angie Morgan.

All our meetings are livestreamed via ETV and archived on the State House Website

We will continue to work up thru the full House debate mid March and then work to negotiate a compromise with the Senate and Governor, hopefully before we adjourn til next year.

If you’d like to know more about Higher Education in our state, visit the Commission on Higher Education Website. South Carolina is home to world class institutions of higher education that can prepare students for nearly any career. From large research universities with more than 40,000 students to technical colleges with 1,000 or less, our state has a broad variety of options in the pursuit of higher education.

Each of the 33 public institutions of higher education in South Carolina can be categorized into one of three sectors: research institutions, four-year comprehensive teaching institutions, and technical colleges. A fourth sector, independent institutions, is comprised by the state’s 20 private, nonprofit colleges and universities.

As always, if you have any advice I welcome it! As we move through the budget, I’ll share more here at our recently updated Nathans News website. If you are not receiving my regular Community Update emails, please email me at [email protected] and ask to be added to the distribution list!
