“Fukushima Update, 1/21/15″
“Study: Fukushima plume spread worldwide, far exceeding the hundreds of miles mentioned previously — 100 Quadrillion becquerels of Cs-137 released tops Chernobyl — “Implicates radiological hazard at distances otherwise overlooked”
By ENENews
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (pdf), University of Florida College of Medicine, Weill-Cornell Medical College, etc. (2014): “The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident is an example of a contemporary nuclear plant accident with serious implications.

The Fukushima NPP accident has had health implications due to the high levels of radiation released and vast area over which the radiation has disperse. The significant radiation release, as likened to Chernobyl, reflects the context and severity of the Fukushima accident.

The level of 137Cs that was released is likened to Chernobyl levels, with 100,000 TBq released. Radioactive plume dispersion occurs worldwide, far exceeding 300 miles previously mentioned. This should implicate radiological hazard at distances otherwise overlooked.

Potassium Iodide Distribution: Radioactive plumes from the Chernobyl accident containing 131I caused benign and malignant thyroid nodules to develop, especially in children within a 310 miles radius of the incident.

The current recommendation is for KI [potassium iodide] availability to people 200 miles from a NPP. Plume radii for nuclear events have been shown to exceed 300 [miles]. Extension of KI availability to 300 miles only further underscores the inadequacy of current preparedness plans. In regard to KI prophylaxis, TEPCO utilized 17,500 KI tablets for 2,000 onsite workers, with one individual receiving and taking 85 tablets.

Radiological plumes containing 131I cause benign and malignant thyroid nodules to develop within a 300 mile radius. This necessitates KI pre-distribution to all schools, hospitals and other of-interest sites extending 300 miles from any nuclear reactor. Evacuation or sequestering is impossible in congested urban areas.

There is currently virtually no compliance with the 20 miles radius KI pre-distribution law, section 127 of the Bioterrorism Act of 2002. In fact, there is little compliance with the 10 miles Ki pre-distribution radius law in the United States. Japan did not utilize KI for prophylaxis of the general public, acknowledging it was not prepared to act accordingly.”

TV: “It’s like a scene from a horror movie” along West Coast — “We’re seeing all sorts of mysterious goings-on” — “There is no food out there” — Scientists can’t figure out why there’s mass starvation of seabirds — “This is a really serious thing” — “A species die-off is always unsettling” (VIDEO)

KOMO, Jan 15, 2015: ”Biologists are trying to figure out why there’s a mass starvation of Cassin’s auklets along the West Coast. The number could reach as high as 100,000. “A species die-off is always unsettling,” said Port Townsend resident Patra McDowell. Her husband, Larry, is equally concerned. “We’re seeing all sorts of mysterious goings-on primarily because we’re seeing changes in the climate,” he said. One of the theories is that climate change has drastically affected the ability of the Cassin’s auklet to survive. Julia Parrish of [the Univ. of Washington's] COASST, Coastal Observation & Seabird Survey Team, is investigating. “So this is a really serious thing and it’s making us wonder, are Cassin’s auklets the ‘canary in the coal mine’ for the near-shore marine environment?” she said.”

KOMO Transcript: “Scientists cannot figure out why there’s a mass starvation of a certain type of seabird. Tens of thousands of Cassin’s auklets are washing ashore on the West Coast.”

Peninsula Daily, Jan  12, 2015: ”Researchers hope that necropsies this week will reveal the cause of a dramatic increase in the number of dead or starving Cassin’s auklets discovered on beaches in northern Washington in December, a figure 128 times normal levels. This represents a rapid increase over October when mortality was 17 times more than normal and November, which saw death rates 56 times higher than normal, according to COASST seabird program coordinator Jane Dolliver.

Birds were sent to the USGS. Since October, the small, white-bellied gray birds have washed ashore in unprecedented numbers on beaches between British Columbia and Central California. Several rehabilitated auklets are ready for release, but [Cynthia Daily, operator of the nonprofit Discovery Bay Raptor Rehabilitation and Education Center in Port Townsend] is waiting until the spring “because there is no food out there.” Dolliver said that the reason for the massive die-off “is the $3 million question,” but she feels that it has to do with more than just a shortage of food.

“If it was only a lack of food, then more species would be affected, although it could have something with their inability to get food,” she said. It’s normal for some seabirds to die during harsh winter conditions, especially during big storms, but the scale of the current die-off is unusual, researchers say, speculating it could be the result of a successful breeding season. Almost all of the auklets found on the beaches are dead, and Daily said she is not aware of any live auklet rescues on the Northern Olympic Peninsula since the die-off began. Daily said she knew last year that it would be a rough winter for the auklets because of predictions of a diminishing food supply.”

The News Guard (Oregon), Jan 17, 2015: INVESTIGATION: “Mass seabird deaths — The discovery of hundreds of dead birds has scientists puzzled and has triggered an investigation into the cause. According to officials, the majority of deaths have been reported among two species of seabirds, Cassin’s auklets and the common murres.”

The Weather Channel, Jan 11, 2015: Dead birds washing ashore by the thousands on Pacific coast baffle scientists – “It’s like a scene from a horror movie.”

All that can be said is, ‘better in the ocean than in the atmosphere’. There is no chance for life if it gets into the atmosphere, one teaspoon of plutonium could kill all life on Earth and they have tons of it. Also, in the ocean it reacts with the sea water making the material inert much faster than it would otherwise. In the ocean it’s the lesser of two evils.

It was a plot created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) immediately after the Tohoku earthquake in March 2011 showing the wave height of the tsunami that followed. It had (and has) nothing to do with the flow or spread of radioactive seepage from Fukushima.

As for whether the current Fukushima “emergency” poses a danger to residents of the U.S., American officials have stated that the diluting effects of the vast Pacific Ocean expanse would likely neutralize any deleterious effects from the radioactive seepage by the time it reached U.S. shores:
In the United States, across the Pacific, there was no sense of alarm.

“With the amount of dilution that would occur, any kind of release in Japan would be non-detectable here,” said David Yogi, spokesman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Eric Norman, a nuclear engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley, said the latest leak was not a concern.

“The Pacific Ocean is an enormous place,” said Norman, who found radiation from the Fukushima nuclear power in California rainwater, milk and plants soon after the earthquake and tsunami. “There’s a lot of material between us and Japan. No matter what happens in Fukushima, it’s not going to be a problem over here.”
Likewise, the Hawaii State Department of Health has been monitoring Japanese water quality surveys and anticipates no public health effect in that state due to leaks from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant:
The Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) continues to monitor the results of water quality surveys [from Japan] and does not anticipate any public health effect on beachgoers or seafood safety around the Hawaiian Islands, due to the following factors:

      • Water acts as a diluent. While there may be significant quantities of radioactive material released into the sea near the Fukushima reactor site, the massive amount of water in the Pacific Ocean would rapidly dilute and disperse the materials to negligible levels.

      • Some radioactive isotopes rapidly decay. For example, the half life of Iodine-131 (I-131) is about eight days. This means that the activity level of the I-131 isotope drops by half every eight days. Given the length of time since the event, the short-lived radionuclides would have decayed to near background levels and therefore pose no health hazard. Although Cesium isotopes have longer half-lives (Cs-134 has a half-life of about two years, Cs-137 a longer half-life of about 30 years), the radionuclides also undergo biological excretion and do not continue to build up in fish forever.
(Similar “false image” fears were spurred by the Internet circulation of a nuclear fallout map back in March 2011.)

In December 2013, alarmist reports were spread on the Internet with headlines such as “TEPCO Quietly Admits Reactor 3 Could Be Melting Down Now!” and “Persons residing on the west coast of North America should IMMEDIATELY begin preparing for another possible onslaught of dangerous atmospheric radiation!” Such claims were exaggerations based on much less sensational reports (similar to ones issued several months earlier) which simply stated that the plant’s operators, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), had recently observed steam issuing from one of the damaged Fukushima reactor buildings but had “not identified [any] abnormal plant conditions.” As noted at the Fukushima Diary blog:
Since the end of 2013, a hoax has been going around on the Internet saying that Reactor #3 is experiencing a meltdown. (In fact, it had already melted down some time earlier.)

From my observation, this mess started with an article on Enenews saying that Reactor #3 had been observed still steaming multiple times in December, which is correct.

However, “steam” has been observed issuing from that reactor beginning in July 2013, and since then it has been observed almost every day. From the frequency of the “steam,” I assume it is evaporated coolant water leaking out of primary containment vessel, and we’re seeing it now because TEPCO has removed the major debris from the top of the reactor. Probably the steam has been coming up since just after [the earthquake of] March 2011. Sure it’s extremely radioactive, nobody can stand on the top of reactor #3, and it’s harmful for the west coast. However, it’s been that way for 3 years now.
