“A Magnitude 5.6 earthquake has struck in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant disaster site. The quake significantly shook the already-damaged Spent Fuel Pools, causing additional instability and increased leakage of cooling water.

Over 100 tons of spent nuclear fuel remains in the fuel pools. That fuel must be constantly cooled by flowing water. If the water drains because the fuel pools are cracked (from the M9.2 earthquake of March, 2011) and the water drains out, the spent fuel rods will overheat and burst into flame. This would be a nuclear fire, venting directly into the atmosphere. Radiation from such a fire would reach the west coast of the United States and Canada within three days as prevailing winds carry it over the Pacific Ocean. No word yet on any such danger. This 5.6 quake struck at a very shallow depth of only 10 km.

UPDATE 1:37 PM EST: The 5.6 quake reported above was the SECOND earthquake to strike in the same area within two hours. Earlier, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck nearby, but deeper in the earth, at 54.7 km as shown on the graphic below:
