“They booed the President of the United States of America in public last night. And that’s fine, because he’s not a king. Context is important, though, so “batter up”… The Donald doesn’t entirely grasp the breadth and depth of the bile, bombast, braggadocio, and bullshit he unleashed Sunday morning as he announced the death of the most wanted terrorist in the world.
Fitting, perhaps, that he leaned into the World Series Sunday night for approbation from a crowd that will never give it to him. That’s the Duopoly and its Swamp. Its only concern is the perpetuation of its own power and the preservation of its sensibilities. Tragicomic, almost, how much the Donald and the Duopoly reflect each other.
It’s important that we understand it was an utterly illegitimate “Empire First” objective – “regime change” in Damascus – that got us involved in Syria’s complex ethnic and religious stew. The Duopoly armed two bitter enemies as its “allies” in the battle against the ISIS caliphate. Of course, the ISIS caliphate is itself a product of Imperial Washington’s intervene-upend-and-abandon act in a similarly shattered state of Iraq.
Syria is one of the most wretched neighborhoods on Earth, and the Duopoly – neocons and neoliberals – did it. From its pre-2011 population of 23 million, more than 6.7 million have fled to Lebanon (1 million), Jordan (700,000), Turkey (3.6 million), throughout Europe and elsewhere. At the same time, more than 6.5 million Syrians are internal refugees
They’ve all been driven from their homes and towns by a so-called “civil” war that wouldn’t have lasted more than a few months but for the billions of arms, training, and “walking around money” Imperial Washington and its Persian Gulf allies have supplied to the violent opposition. And, now, the Syria’s economy is in shambles. Its ancient cities are reduced to steaming piles of rubble. Disease and malnutrition stalk the land. There’s precious little potable water not near enough medical supplies.
Imperial Washington’s objective was what, exactly? Well, it was to remove from power a family that had ruled Syria since 1971 with a mildly authoritarian writ but also reasonable economic stewardship. The Assad regime was slightly better than par for the Middle East course. And it posed no threat whatsoever to America’s homeland security.
In fact, the Shiite clan formed an inherent barrier to the spread of Sunni jihadism. And it had ruled Syria under a secularist policy of tolerance for the scores of ethnic and religious minorities – including Christians, Druze, Kurds, Turkmen, Assyrians, Jews, Yazidis, Twelvers, Ismailis, and numerous more – that populate the ersatz nation-state. Bashar al-Assad’s real sin is that he aligned with his Shiite co-religionists in Iran. This the War Party cannot abide – this is about “power” and “not power.”
The “ever-present existential Iran threat” is what keeps not just Bibi Netanyahu but also Imperial Washington’s Duopoly in power. It stokes the military-industrial-surveillance complex, which feeds all the “responsible” people.
In short order, Assad will be back in control of Kurdish lands northeast of the Euphrates. And the whole purpose of Imperial Washington-instigated Syrian civil war – an epic economic, political, social, and human calamity – will have been for naught.
And, of course, Cool Hand Vlad Putin will help his longtime ally in Damascus reassert control over those territories where his grip might have loosened.
At the same time, Assad will likely supply his more recent partner in Ankara with a “safe zone” along the Syria-Turkey border. Kurdish and Syrian Democratic Forces elements will be banned, allowing the massive Syrian refugees population in Turkey to be processed and camped as they begin to return home. That’ll relieve Turkey of a massive fiscal and political burden posed by the millions of Syrian refugees now within his borders because Imperial Washington’s warmongers wrecked another country.
There’s a larger rebuke to Imperial Washington in the history-changing events unfolding on the Turkey-Syria border… Vladimir Putin will have stopped Turkey, a member of NATO, from invading Syria, its neighbor, in order to remove an armed threat that Imperial Washington had stood up on its borders.
In other words, the whole predicate of NATO was about to be slammed by a lunatic conflict of Imperial Washington’s own making. That’s the modern implication of the Article 5 “collective defense” proviso of the NATO treaty, which means “an attack against one Ally is considered as an attack against all Allies.”
Had Turkey invoked Article 5, Imperial Washington would have been obligated to join its Turkish and FSA “allies” in attacking its Kurdish/SDF “allies.” In the alternative, had Imperial Washington invoked Article 5, presumably Turkey would have been obligated to make war on itself…
Should Putin succeed in arranging a settlement among the Turks, the Kurds, and the Assad regime, he will also have prevented NATO from committing a fratricidal selfie. Ironic that NATO ostensibly exists to stop Putin from invading Europe and the Middle East too…
There could be no more cogent reminder that NATO is pointless and has been since the Soviet Union disappeared nearly 30 years ago than Imperial Washington imposing sanctions and tariffs on Turkey for moving to secure its own borders. Perhaps this contretemps in the dusty plains east of the Euphrates might finally be a wake-up call, though the Duopoly certainly won’t heed it. And it seems as if the whole world has, indeed, gone mad.”
