Forced Abortion Sparks Calls to End One-Child Policy

The Chinese regime’s one-child policy is under fire after a woman was forced to end her seven month pregnancy. 27-year-old Feng Jianmei remains in a Shaanxi hospital more than a week after the unwanted procedure.

Dr Liu Kaiming, director of a Shenzhen-based civil think tank, says Feng’s case highlights the rights abuses under the banner of family planning.

“This incident exposes the family planning system, and the huge number of basic human rights violations that took place there over the past three decades. The system has an abundance of power…the fact that an administrative organ can determine birth, and the existence of a life is against modern political ethics.”

Photos of Feng and her aborted fetus posted online outraged the Chinese public, with many posting scathing remarks of family planning authorities. Jiang Yalin, who has a child sickened by China’s 2008 melamine milk scandal, says the people responsible for forced abortions should be held accountable.

“Human beings should not be doing family planning work. We should end this evil law. I really feel that we need to have a memorial for these killed babies, and the mothers who were forced to abort. People should know about these serious crimes.”

Chinese state-run media reports that local officials have apologized to Feng and her family. Three family planning officials have since been suspended.

A Beijing lawyer hoping to help the family says he’s so far not been allowed to see Feng in hospital.
