We Have Lost Our Moral Compass

By Grant Phillips
I was just thinking of my grandparents. All four were Christians and have been deceased for several years. The thought that comes to mind is, “If Jesus would instantly transfer them from Heaven to earth, right now, what would they think of this fallen world we now live in?” Our world is much different now than it was when they moved on to Heaven by their deaths.
If you’ll think about it, you and I have grown accustomed (tongue in cheek) to the evil around us because it has come upon us slowly. I am reminded of the frog placed in tepid water. The water is heated gradually until the frog is boiled alive. If the frog had been placed in hot water, it would have attempted to jump out, but since it was heated gradually, it didn’t notice the heat until it was too late.
Maybe this is why we don’t spend more time on our knees than we do. We have gotten so used to the degradation around us; we don’t notice it as much as we should.
A new movie that is out now has broken the all-time record for its use of the “F” word. It is called Wolf of Wall Street and this particular word is used 506 times. My wife and I have not seen it, and will not be doing so.
I recall in grade school my younger brother came home from school one day and said the “F” word right in front of my Dad. Dad said something like, “Son that is a very bad word. Don’t ever say it again.” That word was never again said in our house. The next day in school I was thinking about that word though, wondering what it meant, so I asked one of my cousins. He told me to ask a girl who I will not mention by name. By the twinkle in his eye, I had a bad feeling about it and decided to drop it. Thank God. I remember more than one occasion of us children sometimes having our mouths washed out with soap, but not for that word.
Another time my younger brother came home and asked my Dad “What is an S.O.B.” Listening closely, he told us both, that it was a very bad name someone would use to dishonor our Mother. If it ever happened, we should give them a good thrashing. We still didn’t know why, but it sounded like a good idea to us.
Using profanity in our house would result in having your mouth washed out with soap. Believe me, soap is not very tasty. Anyway, we were naïve in our younger years and I thank God for my parents.
We have received the Reader’s Digest in our home for many years. It has always been a handy size family magazine to keep in the bathroom for those quiet times. I noticed their September 2013 issue had an article about two “gay” men living together. It was a positive article (from Reader’s Digest viewpoint anyway) about this “couple.” When our subscription runs out, which should be soon, it will not be renewed. They will be notified that we are cutting ties and will no longer be supporting them financially.
My wife and I enjoy relaxing now and then with a good movie. A month or two ago we sat back to enjoy what we thought would be something with a lot of action. It had a lot of action alright and a continuous flow of profanity, and that was the first few minutes! That is also as long as it lasted, because it found its way to the trash can. I was so disgusted I don’t even remember the name of it.
We have witnessed over the years several big name “stars” of Hollywood who have sunk to levels of depravity in movies that reach right down into the sewers and pull up a big handful of what is deposited there. We don’t watch them, but have read the reviews.
Then there’s television. If you have children in your home, stand guard. For example, the television industry really likes the “reality” shows. The shows are saturated with idiots. What can I say? That’s what they are; idiots with filthy mouths.
My hat goes off to Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty. If every Christian had the same resolve to follow Christ as the Robertson family, no matter what, can you imagine what a difference it would make in our society? Sadly, most of us Christians have no backbone and would never have survived under the Roman Empire.
Now let me say at this point that I do not walk around with a halo over my head. I am just as imperfect as anyone else. Ask my wife. But as imperfect as we are as Christians, we are now having everything possible thrown in our face that we know is a sin against God. We as Christians do not claim any superiority over non-Christians. We are not “holier than thou.” We are sinners too, but we have been saved by the blood of Jesus Christ and our desire is to live for Him.
If immorality has come this far in just my lifetime, I can’t imagine the lack of morality people will have when the Church is removed from this world at the Rapture. The only thing, in my opinion, that is still preserving some form of decency in our society is the presence of the Holy Spirit working through the Church. When the Church leaves, that vacuum will be filled with pure evil.
I can’t imagine.
Even though we may be laughed at and taunted, we Christians need to be completely open for God to use us for His glory while we are here. Even though the stench of Satan is filling the land like a fresh skunk spraying, true power is not Satan’s. It is God’s. Maybe He will work through us to save a soul from much heartache in the future.

People from the past would be shocked at how far the world had fallen. Everything bad is now considered good. People tell lies and they think it’s good. All kinds of degenerated and immoral things are now shown off as something to be proud of.
Ageed 100%!
you know all about lying thats for sure
Hmmm, thank goodness for the Christian faith and it’s perfect moral pedigree
As it happens I don’t disagree with a lot of what you have said. I think we are suffering greatly from moral decay and while the bible holds some valuable lessons in morality, it loses it’s appeal when spouted by pious, sanctimonious bible bashers! (This is not directed at you the author personally).
There are many sources from which we can take lessons, including other non Christian religious texts and indeed even movies like The Wolf Of Wall Street can be taken as a lesson/reminder of how not to conduct yourself.
God and religion are not requirements for morality.
On a practical note, I have often raised the question with Church-goers about the uncritical, passive acceptance of usury as part of a Christian society.
The charging of interest, compound or otherwise, is at the root of the ascendancy of all the selfish nastiness in the world today.
It is this one factor that has allowed certain kinds of beings to gain enormous influence in politics, science, finance, education and the mass media.
Surely it is time for ALL Churches to do as Jesus did in the Temple and take a strong stand against this pernicious evil.
ANY Church or congregation which does not take a Christian stand against usury, CANNOT in my view – nor in fact in Jesus’ – call themselves a christian movement.
hello mr. rapture ready guy. peace to you. do you keep the 7th day Sabbath? do keep the unclean food commandments? do you keep His feast days? do you guard the commandments of God and the witness of Jesus as it is written in revelation 12? I am not jewish. I try to keep all of God’s laws as is possible. I don’t count on being raptured as we will get our judgments on judgment day. May the Most High have mercy on us all.
@Love Ya
Lots of Christians are bound to obey the Pope not the ‘Laws’. Lots of Christians spent the last 2000 years not being discouraged from reading the Bible.
Similarly Jews did not read the ‘Old Testement’ they followed the Talmud.

Liberalism and greed is the root cause of most issues plaguing the world today…
It’s because of atheists. If no one believes that there are far reaching repercussions in the afterlife than no one will have any incentive to do what is right while living in the physical world. We are an amazing thing, souls with the opportunity to experience the physical world like only the physical can. No God = no respect for others and breeds a selfish, physically trapped race non-deserving.
I do not agree Justin,
I am an atheist but I don’t think anyone would consider me selfish and I absolutely try to treat people with respect. As I expect to be treated.
Like the author of this article, I do not lay claim to a halo for I am human (just like you), I am capable of the good and the bad (just like you) but (I assume just like you) I try to be a reasonable person with a bit of moral fibre.
I do this for self respect and to set the right example for my son.
Unlike you, i do not need the fear of damnation or the selfish motivation of rapturous salvation to be a “good person”.
Like I said, “God and religion are not requirements of morality”.
What do you base your morality on?
It would seem that if there is no afterlife, then you can do whatever the hell you want… and your son is just a clump of talking cells, so why even care if he has a good example? His life would mean nothing, as would yours, along with your made up morality…
If an atheist and a Christian examine the same data but come to different conclusions, why is one called science and the other called faith? Evolution has detached man from his creator and being created in God’s image and likeness. Evolution is nothing more than a religion that enables people to justify writing their own rules. Man is now a free agent to tamper with his DNA under the guise of advancing evolution. Therefore, man sees himself as the captain of his own destiny. He is going to overcome death, disease, and human limitations. Rather than live with the image of God that he has and received the cure for his fallen state, man would rather pretend that God does not exist and attempt his own cure. Even the difference in the sexes is no longer considered to be God-given. Mankind is racing toward changing the very image that we were created in to disconnect us from God forever.
The audacity of people to claim that their guesses on human origins are fact and unquestionable even though they are based on hypothetical origins reveals arrogance that has no boundaries… God himself has invited us to examine, search, and explore. He knows that those who do this with a humble heart, and those who do this with the intent of truly discovering truth, will indeed discover Him. Jesus is not afraid of an examination. In fact, He provided the platform, through the Bible, to facilitate it. I am thoroughly convinced that through the study of Jesus Christ we can find out who we are, how we came to be, and where we are going. The very purpose of your life is found in the person of Jesus Christ, and He has invited all of us to examine the evidence of who He is. I say it can be sobering because we are all without excuse. The secular worldview, powered by evolution, finds itself void of any fuel. It is plain to us that the hand of God is prevalent and constant in creation, and no other explanation of the world stands in this modern age. The Bible alone explains who we are and who God is. It is comforting, because we have answers, and it is sobering because we are all accountable for the knowledge that we now have. We cannot claim ignorance, for we have been exposed to the evidence; we are either for Christ or against Him. The evidence, being so clear, removes any claim of a middle ground. Therefore, those of us who have tasted the heavenly gift – who have not been born again and filled with the Holy Spirit – cannot travel a road that alludes to a vague intelligent designer.
@TheRealist
All social systems are religions. Belief in God (or that off somewhere having a cup of tea and a biscuit) is not necessary for religions.
@Omega and the Beast
If the universe was created in 6000 BC why would the preceding 14 billion years have been too? Time is just a mental construct. Photons, for example, do not exist in time.
And really if you are arguing that the universe was not created when Jesus was conceived (and the preceding 14 billion years too – his ancestors included) then why would you assume that your conception of time is a MORE Christian one?
@Omega and the Beast
Thank’s that’s really interesting.
I usually just point out to Christians who might not agree with evoloution on religious grounds that it is after all, a convention to say BC and AD. That view of time with it centering on conception might agree wiith their ‘when you destroy a life you destroy a universe’ beliefs. And seems to show an idea of time that medieval Christans were fine with.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?
My morality is based solely on my own opinion, as is yours!
@ Mirabolin
Thank you.
You are undeniably right.
