Recognizing a good business opportunity when it raises its head is paramount in making sound business decisions. Bad business is expensive and difficult to recover from. It also kills your morale.

Depending on what the end result is, you should be able to recognize a business opportunity when it shows up. In fact, you will be able to sniff it out if you know what you want to end up with finally.

You will recognize a business opportunity if:

  1. It will meet a need.

If the need is known, then the opportunity should not be too hard to recognize. You will know exactly what you are looking for. When an insurance agent is looking for business, she/he has a need in mind. They know someone will eventually need life insurance, for instance, so they will look for opportunities to talk about it.

  1. You have the resources needed.

If an opportunity has presented itself and you have no resources to get it off the ground, then it becomes null. If you cannot run the business at present, you must recognize that fact and figure a way out. You might need to bring others in so that the opportunity doesn’t slip away. At least that way, you are not left without anything.

  1. You can provide the service or the product.

In this, there is the market and pricing to take into account. If you can provide the service or product at the current market price, then you are good to go. This would mean that you will earn a profit if you attract customers.

  1. The timing is right.

When the timing and your resources come together in harmony, and the location is right, grab that opportunity. That window may be difficult to find, but it is not impossible. Sometimes there is some truth in the belief that someone can be at the right place at the right time.
