Bushwhack of Halcott Mountain, a Trailless Catskill 3500 Peak from Route 42 in Lexington

Halcott Mountain is one of the lowest of the Catskill 3500 peaks in the Catskill Mountains at only 3,509 feet in elevation. Lacking significant views, the most visited location on the mountain is the 3500 Club canister at the summit.

For this hike we began at the parking lot on Route 42 in Lexington, NY and followed the fairly well worn in herd path to the summit of the mountain. There are no official hiking trails on Halcott Mountain and it is considered one of the trailless Catskill 3500 peaks.

The best way to plan for this hike is to use the New York New Jersey Trail Conference Catskill Trails Map Set. It shows the parking area on Route 42 in Deep Notch that provides the most direct bushwhack access to Halcott Mountain.

While this route is a bushwhack, there is often a fairly obvious herd path along the way. Hikers should be familiar with a map and compass and some backcountry navigation skills are required in order to make this trip.
