The NH 52 With A View - North Percy Peak

Part of New Hampshire’s 52 with a View peaks, North Percy Peak is located in the Nash Stream Forest area, north of the main part of the White Mountains National Forest. At 3,430 feet in elevation, Percy Peak is significantly lower than the highest of the White Mountain high peaks, but what it lacks in elevation, it makes up for with its open rock summit cone.

The trail up North Percy traverses several of these open rock slabs and along the way provides amazing views of the surrounding north country.

For this hike Jeff followed the Percy Peaks Trail from the trailhead on Nash Stream Road, a seasonal road open memorial day through November (till the snow flies). The trail is roughly 2.2 miles one way (from trailhead to summit) and for this hike it was an in and out, though the GPS mileage was a tad over 5 miles overall.

From the trailhead the trail climbs quickly, then levels off for a bit, before ascending steeply again to reach the notch between North and South Percy Peaks. Just past the height of land in the notch, the trail reaches the junction with Percy Loop Trail, which descends, while the Percy Peaks Trail climbs North Percy quickly. You soon exit the wooded areas on the ascent, as the trail makes its way up several smooth rock areas, with views opening up all around you.

In dry conditions, climbing these exposed rocks slabs, is not difficult, but this route is difficult, if not impossible, in wet conditions.

From the summit of North Percy you’re given 360-degree views of the surrounding North Country of New Hampshire, and the high peaks of the White Mountains just to the south. It’s definitely a spot for lots of photos and be sure to pack a nice lunch so you can relax and watch the world go by!
