Can't miss views from Mary's Rock via the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park

Mary’s Rock is one of the can’t miss hiking destinations in Shenandoah National Park – and it’s busy for a reason – the view is tremendous from the open rock ridge summit, with 360 degree views of the surrounding Shenandoah Mountains.

This 4-mile round-trip hike follows the Appalachian Trail from the Panorama Parking Area in Shenandoah National Park. The Parking Area is located in Thornton Gap, near the intersection of Skyline Drive and Highway 211.

Heading southbound on the Appalachian Trail from the parking area, you climb steadily over two miles to the summit, ascending just about 1,200 vertical feet along the way. The Appalachian Trail in this area is well maintained, easy to follow, and beautifully constructed from back in the days of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

For us, with only one car, the only way back to the Panorama Parking Area is to go back the way you came – now following the Appalachian Trail northbound and descending two miles back to the parking area.
