Balsam Mountain Loop - Catskill 3500 Peak with a View!
Balsam Mountain (3,607’) is located in the Catskill Mountains of New York. It’s evergreen summit rises high above the central Catskills and offers a view to the northeast. Balsam Mountain is also one of the Catskill peaks above 3,500′ in elevation and is part of the Catskill 3500 challenge.
This is a roughly 5.2 mile moderate hike with just over 1,700 feet of elevation gain along the way. There are a few steep stretches of trail descending Balsam Mountain towards the Mine Hollow Trail and in places the Mine Hollow Trail descends steeply, but in neither case are the descents difficult.
We would suggest following this loop in a counterclockwise fashion as shown in this video. The ascent is more gradual via the Oliverea-Mapledale Trail and Pine Hill West Branch Trail from this direction and the more steep sections are left for descents.
