Michigan Dogmen!

If you have read my recent short story collection, The Savior Machine, you might guess that I have an interest in dogmen. (Some half-dozen dogmen make things terrifyingly difficult for the hero of the first story.)

Because of my interest, I immediately noticed when Nick Redfern did a write-up about a new book by Linda Godfrey. Her latest in a series of books about werewolf-like entities is titled The Michigan Dogman: Werewolves and Other Unknown Canines Across the USA.

My first exposure to dogmen stories was in the summer of 1987, when I was 12. My parents happened to take us on a camping trip in northern Michigan when “Legend of the Dogman,” a poem set to spooky music, was being played on WTCM radio.

It was put together in April of that year, and became a huge hit. So it ended up being played by request all through the summer — thusly frightening and thrilling every summer camper who happened to hear it on the radio.

I know it chilled the heck out of my brother and I as we lay in our tent at night. We kept an ear out for anything that sounded like an intruder into our campsite — 2 legged or 4 — lest any dogmen catch us by surprise.
