Review By James R. Holland

This is a pretty decent 93-minute, PG-13 Rated Sci-Fi Action-Mystery-Romantic-Thriller. It was definitely the best new movie release of the weekend. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Captain Colter Stevens. He wakes up and discovers he is occupying another man’s body and seated across from a beautiful fellow Chicago commuter train passenger named Christina Warren who is well played by Michelle Monaghan. He has trouble figuring out what is happening. Eight minutes later the train blows up killing everyone on board.

However, the captain wakes up inside a satellite and is soon being contacted by a beautiful female military officer named Colleen Goodwin who is played very believably by Vera Farmiga. She turns out to be his no nonsense mission control officer, but with more sensitivity than would be suspected. She immediately wants to know what he discovered about the commuter train bomber. Confused, he says he doesn’t understand what she is asking and wants to know where he is? She says he is on an important anti-terrorist mission and he is about to be sent back to the train again to see if he can locate the bomb and the bomber before the train is blown apart.

As in the movie “Ground Hog Day,” the captain is sent back again and again to the train eight minutes before the bomb on board explodes. Each time everything happens the same, but he is instructed to try and discover the bomb even if it takes him dozens of return trips.

He is being transported back virtually to the doomed train again and again using a source code invented by computer genius Dr. Rutledge played by Jeffrey Wright. He learns that he is not traveling back in time so much as being inserted into the still glowing memories of one of the dead passengers. According to the script, he maximum time the brain’s memories survive after death is eight minutes.

Every time he goes back to the train the captain in the dead passenger’s form works to find out another detail about the terror attack. He makes trip after trip because he is only allowed such a short time to investigate, observe and question potential terrorists aboard the double-decker passenger train. Naturally, each time he anticipates the events happening prior to them happening and has his ticket ready for the conductor in advance, moves his foot before another passenger spills her Dunkin Donuts coffee on his shoe, etc., etc. To keep the audience from getting bored, that action is vastly speeded up on each return trip. That’s needed because the captain needs to do his searching during the same short period.

The captain is also falling in love with his lovely fellow passenger Christina Warren. Eventually on one of the return visits, he even tries to save Christina by having her get off the train. That doesn’t work because according to his mission control members he can’t really change the past, he can only observe it.

The plot moves on as the captain slowly and painstakingly chases down various clues he encounters during each of his virtual visits into the last eight minutes of that train ride.

While it’s hard to describe the plot any further without spoiling it, the audience will be very interested in the several mysteries in this film. How does the source code work? Will the captain ever be able to find where the bomb is hidden? Is the mad bomber terrorist even on the train?

There are also the mysteries that the captain is also trying to solve about himself. Basic personal questions like is he alive or dead and where is he and the satellite he is occupying during these time trips.

Like all time-travel movies the facts don’t really make a lot of sense and the ending of the film would create all kinds of time paradoxes. Things do get changed even though they haven’t yet occurred so nobody even knows time has been altered.

Sci-Fi fans will enjoy this film despite the time paradoxes. In addition to the main characters already mentioned, the entire supporting cast does a good job as well.

Director Duncan Jones does an excellent job with writer Ben Ripley’s script. This film will remind many of its audience members of the recent film “Inception.” It’s full of mind games and puzzles.
