Thomas Freese On The Hauntingly Ghastly "Shaker Spirits, Shaker Ghosts"

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

What are some of the ghostly events that have happened in these Shaker communities? I read in the description that children are afraid of moving tombstones. Wow. Could you tell us about that and some other things?

TF: There has been a real fascinating variety of experiences reported from the several villages included in my book. In addition, I’ve heard but not documented encounters with Shaker spirits in two different Shaker villages, one in Kentucky and another in Massachusetts.

Many of the Shaker experiences have been personal and almost intimate. One lady reported that a Shaker female brought fresh towels to the room at her overnight stay. At Pleasant Hill, there are more than 30 restored buildings with 7 buildings having overnight accommodations. So, even the visitors are there for the odd hours of the night or early morning. Some of the Shakertown employees have shared amazing stories. And there is a wonderful interplay at Pleasant Hill, because there really are some employees walking around, doing some chores, dressed as Shakers. So it causes the visitor to wonder, when the Shaker dressed person who just passed them on the hallway disappears—was that a ghost?! A few tales are from the Shaker graveyard but many occur in the restored buildings, the Shaker dwellings and Meeting House. Some Shaker spirits are seen out in the village lane, in the woods or open land. Sometimes, the emotional impact leaves the person saying that the Shakers appeared very stern, very serious. But if you think about how hard their life was, and what kind of world it was for someone back in the early 1800s, well…the Shakers had to be very self-disciplined and that comes through in some encounters.
