Nick Redfern on Monster Files: A Look Inside Government Secrets and Classified Documents on Bizarre Creatures and Extraordinary Animals

 

1. What is the general theme of Monster Files and why did you write the book?

 

ANSWER: The book is basically a study of how, and why, government agencies have taken an interest in reports of strange creatures. This includes Bigfoot, lake-monsters, sea-serpents, werewolves, the Abominable Snowman, and many more. I obtained a lot of official documents concerning official, secret interest in all the above.

2. What is the story concerning U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and Bigfoot?

 

ANSWER: The president spoke with a hunter named Bauman who had a strange experience in the 1800s in the Rocky Mountains. It involved a friend of Bauman who was killed – slaughtered might be a better term – by something large and wild that walked on two legs. It’s an eerie story, and one made intriguing and notable by the fact that it reached the ears of a U.S. president.

3. What is the truth about the Soviet Union’s attempts to cross-breed apes and people?

 

ANSWER: This revolves around a man named Ilya Ivanov who tried, in the 1920s and 1930s, to splice humans and apes – both in the former Soviet Union and Africa. As far as we know, the experiments all ended in failure. However, rumors circulate that incredibly – and against all the odds – one or two may have succeeded.

4. Can you tell us about the conspiracy of the World War Two Werewolf?

 

ANSWER: Werewolves are a big interest of mine, and I include in the book the story of a hair-covered man shot and killed on British soil during the Second World War. A big cover-up was put into place, as the man was a member of a rich and powerful family in the English county of Devonshire. The man may have been suffering from a condition called Hypertrichosis, which causes the body and face to develop massive amounts of hair. But, it led to rumors a real-life werewolf was shot. Who knows, maybe that’s the real answer!

5. Why did the U.S. military spread fictitious stories about monsters on the loose in the Philippines in the 1950s?

 

ANSWER: This was an ingenious operation put together by an expert in the field of psychological warfare operations, Major Edward Lansdale. He spread stories of vampires in the forests of the Philippines to help squash an uprising by rebels called the Huks, who were deeply fearful of the vampire stories.

6. Was the famous Flatwoods Monster of 1952 a secret creation of the American intelligence community?

 

ANSWER: In 1952 a weird, 12-foot-tall creature was seen at Flatwoods, West Virginia. It gave off strange sparks and flashes and scared a handful of people who saw it. Doing research, I stumbled upon an officially documented story of how the British Army – during the Second World War – tried to scare Italian villagers by making a contraption just like what was described at Flatwoods. I suggest in the book that the Flatwoods Monster may have been a US equivalent of the UK original.

7. Does the U.S. Government have the body of one or more Bigfoot on ice and why did the U.S. Air force take an interest in Bigfoot in the 1970′s?

 

ANSWER: There are a couple of chapters in the book that suggest one or more corpses of Bigfoot might have been secretly autopsied – one in the early 1960s, and perhaps even several in the 1980s. The stories are very controversial, as one of them even ties in with UFOs. It’s definitely one of the most controversial parts of the book.

8. Will you tell us about the CIA’s Frankenstein-like project to create a creature that was half-cat and half-machine?

 

ANSWER: This was a project called Acoustic Kitty. The plan was to insert radio antennas into cats and train them to walk around the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C. in the 1960s, to see what conversations they could pick up and broadcast back to HQ. It’s one of those stranger than fiction capers that ended in inevitable disaster!

9. What is the conspiratorial connection between the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and reports of large and savage big cats roaming the British countryside?

 

ANSWER: Although she did not know it, in the 1980s Diana was secretly watched regularly by British Army Intelligence. This was due to fears she might be kidnapped or assassinated by terrorists, such as the IRA. On one occasion, late at night, when the army was spying on Diana with night-vision equipment, they caught sight of a huge black, leopard-like creature roaming around the old house she was in. Britain has a long history of so-called “big cat” or “alien big cat” sightings that stretch back centuries.

10. Has the U.S. Navy been secretly monitoring reports of gigantic sea-monsters lurking in the depths of the world’s oceans?

 

ANSWER: This is a very weird angle, involving possible tracking by military agencies of gigantic sea monsters, possibly real-life sea-serpents, massive squid, or something like H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu! The oceans of our world are very deep and not overly explored at their deeper depths, so it’s not impossible that there could be massive beasts lurking far below.

11. What can we expect from you next book wise and any links you’d like to share? Thanks Nick.

 

ANSWER: My next book is titled For Nobody’s Eyes Only. It’s a look at cases where official documents should exist, but where the files have mysteriously vanished, such as regarding Roswell and Britain’s Rendlesham Forest UFO case of 1980.
