Spontaneous Combustion in Italy

Back in the 2004, 11 January, in a village of the Messina province, some appliances, mattresses, machinery, electrical wires (detached from the rest of the system) present in several houses began to burn with no apparent explanation.
Sicilian people are usually superstitious and very devoted to God, but that time the villagers didn’t panic at all and contacted first the Enel electrical society, they thought about a leakage of electricity. So, the current was cut but the fire continued to flare up. The country of Caronia was electrically isolated but an house started to burn up in flames anyways (a few days later the fact). The owner was trying to save at least his couch but when he reached the outside, he saw the sofa going on fire… by itself.
The town declared the state of calamity. Geophysicists, volcanologists, engineers and the civil protection began to work on the problem; everyone wanted an explanation and people started to came to the little town to make their own investigation.
One year later the Task Force created by the Presidency of the Council announced that Caronia was affected by electromagnetic waves of artificial origin and that it was pretty much it… unexplainable.
This town actually has the highest concentration of UFO sightings and the most paranormal phenomena, compared to the entire Italian penysula (Ufos of various forms emerging from the water, spontaneous combustion, liquefaction of metals, sudden collapses of houses, unexplained rise in temperature of the ground, landslides of the mountains for no apparent reason, etc).
The conspiracy theories among the internet and the community, say that there’s an underwater alien base up to 100 km extent (in the direction of the Aeolian Islands) where the American HAARP project is taking place. They gossip about those so called unknown technologies developed by Nikola Tesla and used by the military, to create a new kind of weapons; ufos are continuously spotted in the sky, followed by airplanes… so that it’s basically what made people to suspect military & “aliens” in the first place.

Everything I wrote in the email it’s basically what he says (i just skipped the mayor’s part because that man had nothing to say, he was kinda shocked because he couldn’t explain it).
If it’s USA base or not, no one can say it… Internet it’s full of those videos, pictures and tapes about Ufos and airplanes in Caronia.
I didn’t make an opinion about it yet, I wished I could visit the town to see it myself but, if the spontaneous combustion was a fabrication I’m sure we would have probably acknowledge it by this time.
