A scan of an ancient mummy has shown that the person’s brains had been scooped out with a spatula.
Researchers at the British Museum made the grim find after the scan showed the instrument had been left lodged in the skull of the body of the man, from Thebes in modern-day Egypt.
The body is believed to have been mummified around 600 BC.
The image of the man’s mummified body clearly shows the spatula in his head and a series of dental abscesses that would have given him bad toothache.
A GUIDE TO MUMMIFICATION
Step 1: Pull out the brain through the nose using using a hook.
Step 2: Open the skull and scoop out any brain matter that remains.
Step 3: Make an incision near the stomach and remove internal organs.
Step 4: Let the internal organs dry before placing them inside jars.
Step 6: Place the heart back inside the body or place an amulet called a heart scarab on top of the chest in its place.
Step 7: Rinse the inside of the body with wine and spices and cover the corpse with salt for up to 90 days.
Step 8: After 40 days fill the corpse with linen or sand.
Step 9: After 90 days, wrap the body from head to toe in bandages.
Step 10: Place in a sarcophagus. If the deceased is wealthy, place the sarcophagus in a burial chamber with jewels and other treasures.
Specific ritual and embalming time varies depending on the culture, and identity of the body.
