Hunger Games Salute Sparks Real-Life Trouble
Protestors of Thailand’s military coup are borrowing the three-fingered salute from The Hunger Games to peacefully show their resistance.
The Associated Press (via CBC News) reports that the Thailand military will arrest protestors in large groups who use the three-fingered salute, which means thank you, admiration, and goodbye to someone you love in The Hunger Games book and film series. Used in the fictional series as a sign of rebellion, Thailand protestors are adopting the salute for the same thing, but with a variation of meanings, with some saying it’s a call for liberty, equality, and fraternity and others claiming it’s for freedom, election, and democracy.
Col. Weerachon Sukhondhapatipak said that a single person wouldn’t be arrested for showing the Hungers Game salute, as first they would be asked to stop. But that’s not necessarily the case if five or more people are caught using the symbol.
“We know it comes from the movie, and let’s say it represents resistance against the authorities,” he said. ”If a single individual raises three fingers in the air, we are not going to arrest him or her. But if it is a political gathering of five people or more, then we will have to take some action.”
