Belgian Lord Murdered in Castle
It sounds like a fictional tale, a murder mystery primed for the best-seller list.
Real life, however, is often far stranger than fiction, a notion proven yet again by the mystery unfolding in Belgium.
Only Trail Of Blood Was Found
On January 31, 2012, lord Stijn Saelens, 34, vanished from Wingene Castle. All that remained were a used cartridge and trail of blood going all the way from the house to the driveway.
His body was found buried in the woods Friday, February 17.
One day prior, police had arrested Saelens’ father-in-law and brother-in-law, and a friend of theirs, Pierre Serry. This led the media to believe the police were given specific directions to the body’s location from their suspects, despite a lawyer for the father-in-law claiming he has a “perfect alibi.”
Another less-devloped idea involves Chechan criminals working in Belgium, and still another believes the two storylines are connected. Three Chechans were also arrested on February 16, and despite rumors that plans of the castle were found in their vehicle, they were released for lack of proof.
Belgian Lord’s Disappearance Remains Unsolved
Saelens’s wife, Elysabeth Gyselbrecht, told investigators her husband asked to be alone on the day of his disappearance, so she left the home. She allegedly claims to have confronted Serry the day after the disappearance, and he told her he had nothing to do with it.
In the understatement of the year, newspaper La Capitale said, “Despite the discovery of the body, the story seems far from being explained.”
It seems that Belgium has a true mystery on its hands, one the most creative author could not have dreamt up.
