Essentially all this experiment was, is having a machine read brainwaves, then send a transmission to a different location as a series of flashing lights. Childrens toys have come out that read brainwaves inaccurately This did the same thing, but transmitted the brain waves as a flash of light to a different location.
No actual information was sent, and the receiving end could not know what the other end was thinking or attempting to transmit when the transmission happened.
This is a case of news media taking a small simple study, and throwing an outlandish headline on it to make people click.
