Felicia Felix-Mentor - The Creepiest Haitian Zombie in the Early 20th Century

Felicia Felix-Mentor was a Haitian woman believed to have been made into a zombie in the early part of the 20th century. She reportedly died in 1907, after a sudden illness of the type that Haitian belief finds to be characteristic of a person marked to be made into a zombie. In 1936 a woman in ragged clothing was found wandering the streets, and made her way to a farm which she claimed belonged to her father. The owners identified the woman as Felicia Felix-Mentor, long thought dead, and Felix-Mentor’s husband also confirmed this. Due to her poor health, she was sent to a government hospital. A doctor who interviewed her described her behavior:

Her occasional outbursts of laughter were devoid of emotion, and very frequently she spoke of herself in either the first or the third person without any sense of discrimination. She had lost all sense of time and was quite indifferent to the world of things around her.

So, as you all might know, there’s a strong belief in voodoo – zombie practices on Haiti. It shares many traits with other faiths of the African diaspora, including the Louisiana Voodoo of New Orleans, Santería and Arará of Cuba, and Candomblé and Umbanda of Brazil and another parts of the world. They believe in many different types of spirits and also, have a superior called Bondye.

After a day or two of preparation setting up altars, ritually preparing and cooking fowl and other foods,a Haitian Vodou service begins with a series of prayers and songs, then a litany in Kreyòl, and then a series of verses for all the main spirits of the house. After more introductory songs, beginning with saluting Hounto, the spirit of the drums, the songs for all the individual spirits are sung, starting with the Legba ((guardian of the crossroads) family through all the Rada (are cool or calm nations or spirits) spirits, then there is a break and the Petwo part of the service begins, which ends with the songs for the Gede family.

Haitians believe that spirits come to visit during the ceremony, by taking possession of individuals and speaking and acting through them. But only the family of those possessed is benefited. At this time it is believed that devious mambo or houngan can take away the luck of the worshippers through particular actions.

Although Vodou is often associated with Satanism, Satan is rarely incorporated in Vodou tradition. Haitians pray to the spirits of relatives or any other spirist that they make contact with. They communicate with the souls of the ancestors, and if that were not enough teachers say they have the power to resurrect the dead, to establish communication with the beyond, and practice of witchcraft, and wizardry with dolls. They also make use of any type curses, ranging from death to severe illness and this particular curses are the case of Felicia Felix weird situation.

Supposedly, some people say she was victim of a curse wishing her death. Another, say that she was resurrect from the dead for a family member. We really dont know wich of these two are true. But we know, that 29 years later a woman appeared walking down the street with torn clothing and white looking eyelashes, like if they were burned into ashes. Her eyes looked lost and out of this world. She kept walking until people start to notice to her weird – zombie appearance. After a while, she made her way to a farm which she claimed belonged to her father and it did. The owners identified the woman as Felicia Felix-Mentor even though she was long dead.

Nobody really knows what happend to her. Doctors said she had a strange illness, others said she came back from the dead.

But we know better and Haitians too. She was made into a zombie due to a voodoo curse. She should have done something very bad to deserve illness…

Theres no records about what happen with her next. Maybe she’s roaming through the villages and watching how people perform superhuman feats during what are called the voodoo dances.

Remember, a belief is the state of mind in which an individual is true knowledge or experience you have about an event or thing. We all need to believe in something. We see miracles, disasters and voodoo consequences happen all the time.
