The Battle is in the Mind

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippine 4:8

Have you ever watched what you’re thinking about during the day?  Have you ever written every thought that came to mind?  My first mentor, Wayne Kendall used to say, the minds of  human beings are garbage dumps.

When I first heard him say this I recoiled and spent time defending my position, that we’re basically good and were not in any way refuse!  That’s when Wayne told me about taking inventory.  After a few hours I realized Wayne was right, as I began to see the garbage in my own life.  This garbage can be hurtful words that a second teacher spoke over us, or something a parent said that devastated us.  It could be that we were bullied as a youngster, or later in life bullied by an employer.  We hold on to this garbage, and it resides in us and it stinks.

The good new is we do not have to hold on to the garbage.  That we can be clean when we come to the savior of our souls, Jesus.  He can sweep our house and rid us of the garbage and we become a new person, just like the scripture tells us we are;  you are a new creature in Messiah, old things have passed away. 

However, the enemy four souls, will never let us really forget about the garbage and in fact, he will spend a good deal of time trying to put the garbage back into us.

Let’s take a moment and examine what Paul admonishes to do, and that is to place our minds, to actively engage our minds, on thoughts that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, of virtue, and praise think on these things!

We become what we are thinking about.  We eventually act on those things we dwell on.  We are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness.

Paul admonishes to pray without ceasing.  I’ve written about this before and I’ll address it briefly here again.  Last week I asked everyone to pray for the Dizdar family.  All through the day and night the Spirit of the Living God would remind me to pray and I would do so.  My praying was not rote, nor was it forced into a time constraint, It was not flowery or filled with thou’s and thee’s!  It was from the heart and it was led by the Spirit of the Living God.

Here’s an example of keeping the garbage out.  If we find ourselves watching a TV show and we become captured by it and find that it is affecting our walk, turn the stinking thing off and spend time in the word.

If we’re watching a movie in a theater and scenes are beginning to compromise our walk, get out.  Flee!

I never went to see Maleficent, even after we had purchased tickets, because The Spirit of the Living God gave me a check and told me not to go.  I obeyed.

Are we thinking about things we shouldn’t be thinking about?  Only each person can answer this, but as the Word tells us, he knows our thoughts.  

In closing todays Bun.  Think on thoughts that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, of virtue.  We should dwell on these thoughts and rid ourselves of the destructive thoughts that are either clamoring for attention or still needed to be cleansed.  One last item.  The enemy will always bring up an incident that we’ve already cleared out and try to tell us we’re dirtbags, and sinners of the worst sort, and accuse us over and over again.  The good news is Jesus paid the price, once for all men and women, and our sins are forgiven.  We are not garbage, but sons and daughters of the living God!  Amen!
