A Man Isolated Himself From Society For Over 25 Years in the Desert. What He Reveals Inside This Cave Is Incredible!
A man isolated himself from society for over 25 years, living in the desert. What he reveals inside the cave he carves is incredible! In the high desert of Northern New Mexico, you can actually hear the sounds of the hand tools being used to sculpt the underground shapes as you stand above the location where a man entranced in his work is carving out a new cave.
On the surface, you will see a small entry into one of his caves, a portal that opens into a deeper and wider cavern, where Ra Paulette has spent most of the last 25 years carving out the New Mexico sandstone into magnificent underground art and living spaces. With a dog as his only daily companion, he has spent many years doing this work, supported by numerous patrons and living above ground on the nearby mesa.
When asked if he is a man obsessed with cave digging, he gives the really thoughtful response,: “Is a child obsessed with play?” He waxes on to say that when you love what you are doing, you are driven to do it all the time.
He sees his majestic pieces as environmental projects. His goal is to inspire people so they open up emotionally in response to the enormity and power which his carvings evoke.
It can be said that he has created magic in the underground caves he has carved. They are at once intimate and overwhelming.
Interestingly, Ra does not see himself as an artist, but simply as a man expressing his sense of wonder in a passionate way. I would beg to differ with his opinion that he is not an artist. What he has created is livable art of unbelievable power.
The video you are about to watch tells the rest of his story, and gives you a tour of his magnificent caves. Unbelievably, his carving work had no notoriety until a filmmaker asked to do a documentary about Ra. Called “Cave Digger”, the film ended up being nominated for an academy award!
Please share your reactions to this story, about a peaceful man with an artistic eye, whose dedication to his craft has become his life purpose.

They know this but YOU don’t… Ask why not?

WOWZA, they are AWESOME…and for a Brit to say AWESOME that means far far better than JOLLY JOLLY GOOD
He’s like a BUDDIST MOLE
Dogs don’t live 25 years.
So he hasn’t been isolated there that long. He left to get a dog, or the whole story is crap. Knowing the internet, I’m betting on the latter.
Clearly JUST “An Observer” and not a very good one! Sorry the narrator took for granted that you had reasoning skills… Does “WORKING in isolation” make it easier to understand?
Let me help you: “…who over the past 25 years, with only his dog to keep him company – has been scraping and shaping New Mexico’s sandstone.”
1) In other words, timeframe, with who and doing what? Working!)
2) Of course the dog is NOT 25 years old. We don’t know at what point the dog came along (whether the dog showed up as a stray or the man obtained him in town where the man most likely lives.)
3) The dog is the ONLY company, companion, partner he’s had AT WORK in the desert caves WITHIN a 25 year span of time.
4) WORKING in isolation versus total isolation from civilization is still ISOLATION! It is NOT an implication that the documentary is untrue. You ASSUMED it was TOTAL isolation from civilization- that’s you’re bad! (The man and dog have to eat, he was well groomed, his clothes were in good shape, where do you think he gets the supplies or the contractors for electricity, paint, etc.?)
5) The length of time the dog has/could be alive, is nothing more than an ASSUMPTION you made based on the misinterpretation of “isolation”. Again, you’re bad! (5 or 10 years – it’s irrelevant. Point being, the dog is the only company he’s had at work WITHIN 25 years!)
It’s such a pity that you would discount this man’s amazing accomplishments because YOU can neither interpret what is meant by isolation nor reason when or how the dog entered the picture. DISTURBING!!!
Faulty reasoning = crap and ridiculous comments.
Amazing talent = EXCELLENT DOCUMENTARY!!!
You sure typed a lot for something I’m not going to care about. What bothers me are these whoring attention grabbing headlines that mislead you into thinking a story is more interesting than it really is.
This story is a perfect example of it. I didn’t waste my time reading all your bullet points, but I’m sure someone might.
Just saying.
Not surprised! “Interesting” is relative to the reader but I wouldn’t expect you’d comprehend that either. Here’s an idea, pick another website! It’s hard to appease the simple.
This site is run by the simple, for the simple. Do you know where you are?
Yes, I know exactly where I am! The difference is I have no expectation that the majority of the articles are going to be of value – I’m able to discern what’s what. Now and then, I come across a really good one. In the meantime, I accept the site for what it is and don’t blame everyone else because what they write doesn’t suit me. That’s being accountable for your own choices.
For someone whose TIME is too precious to read a few bullet points, you don’t mind “checking in” to see who responded to your comment. (It’s ok, you can be truthful – you read them, it’s just the only retort you could come up with was to suggest you’re not going to waste your time…)
Wisdom is far more precious than time and I don’t mind leading people like yourself out of the dark now and then. YOUR WELCOME!
Yup, always come back and check my smart@ss comments that I post, so I can see who responded, and with what kind of useless information.
In your case, I can see (without reading your bullet points, still havent) that you’re butthurt because you thought the video was cool, and that his artwork was amazing, and my response to it was, I do not care about any of that. I posted, merely to point out, the misleading headline. Because tat is a disease on BIN. And it is a disease on all news websites.
See, the headline, in my opinion, implies that this person secluded himself from human contact, for an amazing 25 years, and that is what lead him to create his masterpeice. It was worded to make you think that. But then you come here, read the story, and find out:
Oh, no, hes just an artist, who worked on his art alone for 25 years. Which isnt really amazing at all. Most writers, will not write with someone reading over their shoulder. Most artists, will not paint their best work, with someone standing there watching.
The headline was attention grabbing, for the wrong reasons. How do I know? Because I would not have clicked on this headline, if it was directly accurate “Artist Works On His Art When He Is Alone In A Cave”. Instead the headline is “A Man Isolated Himself From Society For Over 25 Years in the Desert. What He Reveals Inside This Cave Is Incredible!”.
See the problem? Probably not, because you’re blinded by how much more smart you assume you are than me, because you feel the story was worth it.
The problem is, he did not isolate himself from society any more than Stephen King does when working on a novel. Or any more than I do when I work on pencil sketches in my house before my wife comes home from work. The headline, leads you to believe, that he shunned society to exclusively be with his art, and no one else. Which is not true.
You wont read this, but you were right, I do like to come back and make retorts, especially when I know I’m right. Like now. I’m right.
Well said mustache guy.
Wow… how observant.
It appears he went off to the caves during the day and went home to his house at night. Don’t see where he lived there in isolation for 25 years. His work is extremely unique and beautiful if you like that kind of thing.
Time to wake him up.
Now he’s back in the world.
The Apocalypse is now.
What the phu-king hell does that have to do with the articles once again???
Nothing, as usual, Big dog. Hell, even his comments on his own stories have nothing to do with his articles.
Yep. That’s because mental illness is a serious thing. KOS, seek help. There is no shame in seeking help from a medical professional once your brain has made its way into the current state it is in.
In 10,000 years they will be dug up and considered a work of art. Who owns the land?
“Who owns the land?”
That’s probably the next chapter to this story.
Hopefully, now that this creative man’s efforts have become public knowledge, his 25 years of peace and solitude will not then be destroyed through fines, legal battles and possibly jail time for not having first asked some bureaucrat for permission.
The International Bankers of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System hold all of the land and tenants here as ‘hypothected collateral” as per the Bankruptcy of the United States in 1933.
An agent (government) can not legally bind the principal (people) to any condition beyond the scope of authority delegated to the agent by the principal.
i call BS on your sensationalist garbage-
this cat has been doing this for 25 years, but he also has a job-
he sells these to people who commission the works, he just likes it, considers it his art-form-
there was even a small piece about him on CBS Sunday Morning, for cryin out loud-
just stop with the tabloid headlines and outrageous lies already, please-
I think they throw you in prison in the US if they find you doing anything like that.
Good for him, but I hope he at least has never paid taxes to the barbaric overlord, or he will regret that worst use of money in the future.
