ISAIAH 7:13-17

And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted. The LORD will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah–the king of Assyria.”

The one dynamic which sets the Bible apart from any other book on planet earth is the prophetic thread which runs from Genesis to Revelation.  These prophecies are both accurate and called out with great specificity.  However, even then we can miss them.  How many people knew about the birth of Messiah?  Not anyone, except a few shepherds who had a celestial invitation by angels or they would have missed it too!

In other words even though what was written will come to pass and what was foretold will unfold, we see through the glass dimly, as Paul admonishes us.

As Christians we celebrate the birth of our Messiah.  We believe He was the only son of God.  That He fulfilled the prophecies in the TENACH—the old Testament—and that he came for all men and women to set us free from the bondage of sin and death.  

One of the most interesting prophecies of heralding the Messiah’s birth is found above.   It states: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Some of us read this passage and because we’ve heard it so many times—most of us have heard this story read every Christmas since we were little children—we fail to see the miracle, the wonder, the cosmic significance of the statement.  It is nothing less than profound!

We believe that Mary, who was a virgin, conceived.  In other words the seed of the woman that we read about in Genesis 3, was somehow given genetic information—I have no idea how that happened—but nevertheless as The Spirit of the Living God Overshadowed her, she conceived, and later would give birth to the fully God, fully man, Yeshua, or Jesus.

STRONGS NT 1982: ἐπισκιάζω – overshadow

ἐπισκιάζω; (imperfect ἐπεσκιαζον, Luke 9:34 L marginal reading T Trtext WH); future ἐπισκιάσω; 1 aorist ἐπεσκίασα; to throw a shadow upon, to envelop in shadow, to overshadow: τίνι, Acts 5:15. From a vaporous cloud that casts a shadow the word is transferred to a shining cloud surrounding and enveloping persons with brightness: τινα, Matthew 17:5; Luke 9:34; τίνι, Mark 9:7. Tropically, of the Holy Spirit exerting creative energy upon the womb of the virgin Mary and impregnating it (a use of the word which seems to have been drawn from the familiar O. T. idea of a cloud as symbolizing the immediate presence and power of God)

Thus the virgin—as Mary did not know a man, in the Biblical sense, until after the birth of Messiah—did conceive and bare a son.

In closing.  Not only did Mary’s conception fulfill the prophecy that we read in Isaiah, it hails back to the Genesis 3, narrative which states: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

The seed war and the promise of one who would crush the head of the serpent, which we read about in Genesis 3, was fulfilled almost 2000 years ago.  He is our hope, and our redeemer, or future king, and I believe He is returning soon.  We are in the midst of a cosmic regime change that will eventually bring about His return!  Maranatha!
