Roswell: The Final Repose

ROSWELL
THE FINAL REPOSE

With all of the talk about aliens in the news, the reboot of the X-Files and other cosmic elements floating in the zeitgeist, I was contemplating how the whole investigation into what is out there is like a giant jigsaw puzzle. The fundamental question about being alone in the universe motivates people to seek out a greater understanding of where did we come from, why we are here and if there is something greater than man which is elusive and hidden amongst the stars in the sky.

For thousands of years, these questions have been on the minds of mankind after he first decided to look up. Because of its very nature, such questions evoke deep emotion and opinion. It has also sparked things like astrology; something that came before astronomy, mythology as the Gods of the primitive religions were said to have descended from heaven and speculation that takes many roads in order to get to the fundamental truth.

In the end, the circumstantial evidence creates a new found faith in an idea that burns within us, testifying that outside of our matrix there is life out in space.

The subject appears in our artwork, it winds up in our literature, in movies and TV shows, topics discussed on the radio, and some of the music we hear.

When David Bowie released his album, Blackstar, there were a number of people already aware of the impact it would have in the music industry. The title track and the video that accompanied it was released on November 15th 2015 and was a chilling and compelling montage of cosmic images, from a dead astronaut, to ascension, and an eclipsed sun. There were many people on fringe websites claiming this was Bowie’s warning of an imminent alien invasion, the arrival of Planet X – and the death of the space program.

While many mainstream websites all over the world chided conspiracy theorists, thinking they were crazy, the events that transpired afterward seemed like a synchronistic eulogy to Bowie and his artistic efforts. On January 20th, 2016 David Bowie died of cancer. It was then we realized his music and the videos from Blackstar were all foreshadowing his death.

On January 20th 2016, it was reported that scientists at Cal Tech announced they found evidence to show that a new 9th planet was coming into view and for a lack of a better term they called it, Planet X.

The researchers, Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown, discovered the planet’s existence through mathematical modeling and computer simulations but have not yet observed the object directly.

A little under a month after David Bowies death and the announcement of a possible Planet X , a well-known figure who wanted the government to come clean on UFO’s and extra-terrestrials passed away.

Apollo 14 Astronaut, Edgar Mitchell, died on February 4th. Mitchell died almost 45 years to the day after he became the sixth man to walk on the moon. He was the last living astronaut from Apollo 14, the first mission to conduct science on the lunar surface. With his death, only seven of the original 12 Apollo astronauts remain alive. The youngest among them is 80.

Mitchell was born in Texas but grew up in Artesia, New Mexico about 30-40 miles south of Roswell. Mitchell remembered all too well about the summer day in July, 1947 when something crashed just outside of Roswell. Edgar remembers when the Roswell incident took place, he was on my way to college and had just graduated high school.

He said that he read about it in the Roswell Daily Record, which was a newspaper in Roswell, about an alien spacecraft had crashed, and the next day that it had been denied by the Air Force, saying that it was a weather balloon.

He believed the story the Air Force gave and then went off to college.

He then said many years later after he walked on the moon and came back, he was asked to give a lecture in Roswell. He was happy to talk and meet people that he knew since he was a kid.

He said the descendants or the children of the people who had been involved in the Roswell incident were sharing with him their stories.

He said the descendants included the son undertaker Glenn Dennis, who provided “coffins for the alien bodies” and the son of Chaves County Sheriff George Wilcox, who “kept traffic away from the crash site.”

Mitchell said in an interview before his death that a family friend who was a major in the United States Air Force told him that the stories of a crash of a flying disc and the discovery of small human-like figures piloting the craft were all real.

He told Mitchell they covered up the Roswell incident because Military Intelligence did not know if the ‘visits’ were hostile and also did not want Soviet Russia discovering about it.

He told how governmental agencies did not know what to do with the alien crashed saucer and its “superior technology” for fear of it getting into Soviet hands.

Mitchell, one of the many descendants and children influenced by the Roswell Crash, walked on the moon and even made claims the astronauts were never alone out in space.

Such a legacy and as Mitchell had said in interviews, there were other members of families that went on the record about what really happened.

Glenn Dennis died just a year ago. He was the last of the three founding members of the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico.

Dennis told researchers in 1989 that while he worked at Ballard’s Funeral Home in Roswell, he was called by an officer at the base who asked if they had any small, children-sized caskets. Later he said he was at the base while the recovery of the alien craft and the bodies of those killed had been brought in. In the back of an ambulance, he saw some strange metallic debris.

He told several researchers that he was friends with a nurse who told him about the alien bodies and the preliminary autopsy that had been preformed there. In later years his story would be challenged but he did not waver from the details.

Many had claimed that he lied about the nurse’s name. He probably promised not to give her name because he didn’t want her to be in any trouble.

By telling that one lie, he left himself open to disbelief about the rest of his story.

However, the rest of the story has a good deal of corroboration, particularly the part about the base call for small caskets. He was telling friends about that within days, not 40 years later to gain fame.

If he made that part up in 1947 to promote the idea of an alien crash, he had one hell of an imagination. And the witness from Hagerman, N.M., whose family owned the mortuary business there, would have to be lying too, about them being the ones to supply the small coffins since Ballard’s Funeral Home in Roswell didn’t have them on hand.

Part of Glenn Dennis’ story was of Sheriff Wilcox being good friends with his father and warning his father that his son should keep his mouth shut about what he knew. Brother Bob confirmed that part of the story. Anything else was for his brother to tell.

It was his story.

Glenn Dennis, when interviewed, said one of the main factors in him staying quiet for so long was the very nature of the story would invite ridicule, and he didn’t want to hurt or embarrass his family. So here we are awaiting the revelation or so-called smoking gun that one man could have identified as true or false.

On July 2 1947, after a so-called flying disc crashed on the Foster Ranch near Corona, New Mexico, the story has various twists and turns, lies and mythologies spun about what happened next.

The events of the past can become cloudy, and this why it is vital to preserve the stories of the generations affected by the crash to get the whole story and not some watered-down comic book version of the story.

The truth is while over time, it has been concluded a flying saucer crashed there while those involved dispute the claim. The flying saucer of course was a creation of the media after Kenneth Arnold told the press before the Roswell incident that he saw nine shimmering craft between Mount Rainier and Mount Adams over Washington state. Arnold told the press that the aircraft skimmed across the sky like a saucer on the water.

“Flying Saucer” caught on, but the craft at Roswell was similar to what Arnold saw.

The initial report claimed that the “saucer” was similar to a delta shaped missile with large flipped up wings.

Pieces of the crash debris consisted of balsa wood with strange writing on it that looked Chinese and thin metal that was similar to foil or Mylar that would return to its original shape when crumpled up or hit with a hammer.

In a form of word play and semantics, we can also say that aliens were not found amongst the debris either — at the time the term, “ET” or even alien weren’t used in the vernacular.

Today, the talk of alien grays being found in the wreckage at Roswell is common, however, the occupants of the flying machine were sketched on paper and were given to the pilot of the plane that flew the debris to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio. They were never called aliens or greys when they were retrieved from the wreckage. They were however small, bald and looked like malnourished children.

Some even claimed that they looked like circus freaks. The word, “alien” was never used to describe the occupants of the craft.

As the stories began to unfold, the cover ups began, threats were made and the children of Roswell were told not to speak to anyone about the reality.

They were told it was a weather balloon. This began the second story in the nine narratives that allegedly explained what happened.

If it was a weather balloon, why would trained Army Air Force personnel not be able to identify a weather balloon when it was their job to launch them from the 509th bomber group’s base?

What kind of incident would spark a massive reorganization of the military on July of 1947, just 23 days after the Roswell affair?

What kind of event would cause President Harry S. Truman to sign the National Security Act which abolished the old war and Navy departments and establish a single Department of Defense?

The new system would oversee all of the arms of the military. It ended up splitting the U.S. Army Air Forces into two separate groups.

What caused all of this drastic change? What caused us to recruit left over Nazis to create a peacetime spy intelligence cult called the CIA in 1947?

Was it because the Nazis knew of the alien threat before us? Or were they the very aliens that we feared? Before you dismiss this thinking you must understand the eerie coincidences. With all of this in mind you could probably understand why the government would keep the Roswell incident quiet. How would the U.S. Government explain the Nazis had regrouped and that they had beings on their side more advanced than anything they could have imagined?

They couldn’t explain it, but they could take measures to avoid a panic. The Saucer story was immediately dropped. Dropped and covered up to eliminate a panic. The State of Emergency that Roosevelt declared in 1933 remained in effect. It still remains in effect to this day.

I guess now you can figure out why some of the children and descendants of those involved with the Roswell ran scared like children who just broke a storefront window. I guess you can see why no one wanted to talk.

How could they speak out that an alleged enemy fell out of the sky — it could have been hostile, it could have been a present from the Japanese, but it seemed to spark the interest of ex-Nazis?

Arguably, this single incident has shaped mankind’s worldview of whether or not here are aliens out there. Look at how our society has been irrevocably changed as a result of this event. If you feel it is insignificant – that Roswell is a hoax or an event made up by hicks then you may want to look into what happened after the event.

All we have now is history mingled with mythology that has arguably tainted the entire event. The descendants of the family members directly affected by the event are slowly dying off.

Dr. Jesse Marcel Jr., who claimed he handled debris from the 1947 crash, died three years ago. I met him in Roswell and in McMinnville. When I met him, he told me he was in his 70’s and was still jumping out of helicopters in the Middle East to treat and operate on wounded soldiers. I saw him as a true warrior and hero. It seemed that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

Marcel’s father was an Air Force Intelligence Officer and reportedly the first military officer to investigate the wreckage in early, July 1947.

Jesse Marcel Jr. said he was 10 when his father brought home some of the debris, woke him up in the middle of the night and said the boy needed to look at it because it was something he would never see again.

The ongoing investigation into the Roswell case can be tedious. Once you have nailed the history the case seems to trail off into all sorts of claims and hushed up witnesses.

Most of them are dying off and so eventually there will be a tainted history that will eventually become “fact.”

It is up to new researchers and journalists to tell the story – factual and heartfelt accounts can spark new life into the story, or else we will have to suffer and watch as a remarkable event will lie in the final repose.
