Antarctica updates

AND

It’s one of the spookiest places in America and this photo shows why. John and Jessica Mausling visited the famed Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado last month. They took a guided “spirit tour” that explains the 108-year-old building’s haunted history. While walking around they snapped a photo that included something they didn’t see in person.

Discover Colorado’s Most Haunted Spots

Tucked right in between fall and winter rests a day of ghouls, goblins, zombies, and more. I am, of course, referring to Halloween. It’s always fun and entertaining to see the creative costumes that people come up with. But it can also get a bit creepy, too—I have seen everything from a few jack-o-lanters and a bowl of candy on the porch to people turning their homes into a full on haunted house (admittedly, I am pretty sure that I started crying and ran out…I mean, I was only 10). However, in my older years, my tolerance for the scary and gruesome has increased… just kidding, no it hasn’t! So what better way to give you guys a good laugh and me a good scare than by sharing the top most haunted places in the state of Colorado? That’s right, I am talking real live ghost stories from various spots in the beautiful Rocky Mountain state. Take a read and if you have your own creepy stories to tell, please share them with us! We will feature all shared ghost stories on our blog on Halloween.

The Stanley Hotel

Ahh yes, the infamous Stanley Hotel most well-known for inspiring the mastermind of Stephen King when writing The Shining. I’m sure that even if you haven’t seen or read The Shining, you probably know this famous picture:

Yep, that right there is known as the never-ending hallway located on the 4th floor of this beautiful Georgian-style hotel that resides in Estes Park, Colorado. And those two little girls that look incredibly pale and creepy, their ghosts have been spotted playing on the 4th floor, however they are apparently much cuter looking. But before I divulge and give you the skinny on the ghosts of the Stanley, let’s start with a brief history lesson about how this place came to be.

The Stanley Steamer, Stanley Pencils and Rulers, Kodak Film—all of these things have two things in common. Mr. F.O. and Mr. F.E. Stanley were twins from the New England who were true entrepreneurs. They did just about everything you could imagine—they whittled high-end violins, invented a new method of photography that they sold to Eastman Kodak Company, they produced school supply kits, and were also responsible for the Stanley Steamer automobile. When Mr. F.O. Stanley was diagnosed with tuberculosis, he and his wife, Flora, packed up and headed out west.

F.O. and Flora ended up in Estes Park and Mr. Stanley’s health got drastically better. So, the brothers decided to build a hotel in the shadows of Rocky Mountain National Park… thus, the Stanley Hotel. When the Stanley opened its doors in 1909, they hosted friends, family, and guests from all over the United States. But the Colorado winter’s made travel difficult, so the hotel was a seasonal operation. Under the watchful eye of chief housekeeper, Elizabeth Wilson, things ran smoothly and the hotel was always kept in impeccable shape. Mrs. Wilson was upstairs in the Presidential Suite (Room 217) lighting acetylene gas lamps one night. When she struck the match, an explosion occurred, that whole wing of the building crumbled to the ground, and Mrs. Wilson landed directly below the suite in the McGregor Ballroom. Though she only escaped the explosion with two broken ankles and lived well into her 90’s, it is said that Mrs. Wilson still haunts Room 217. The hotel has had guests call before saying that they wanted to know who to tip for organizing their clothing and turning down the beds. After informing the guests that it is illegal for a hotel employee to touch someones belongings, they tell the guest to, “Just say, ‘Thank you, Mrs. Wilson,’ and don’t leave any money… currency doesn’t work on the other side.”

Roaming the halls of the Stanley along with Mrs. Wilson, there are the two little girls who were part of the inspiration for The Shining. As the story goes, Stephen King and his wife were headed up to Granby for a weekend getaway. They got caught in a blizzard while passing through Rocky Mountain National Park. So, they came back down into Estes Park and agreed to stay at the first hotel they saw. They came upon the Stanley, went inside asking for a room, and were told that the hotel was closed for the season. However, the front desk woman and the bartender both agreed to let the King’s stay. That night, Stephen got rather intoxicated and was wandering around the hotel. He was up on the 4th floor and encountered two young girls who asked if he wanted to play with them. King thought the girls were adorable and after speaking with them for a few minutes, he proceeded downstairs to the woman running the front desk and tried to compliment her on how well-behaved her children were. At that point, the woman explained to Mr. King that she did not have any children and those were ghosts. King went to bed, had the worst nightmare of his life waking up with a clear vision for his story, wrote it down, and fell back asleep.

Then we have the ghost of Lord Dunraven, the original owner of the land on which the Stanley Hotel now stands and a bit of a ladies man in his day. Now residing in room 401, has been known to show his affection for attractive woman by pinching their behinds and appearing in the closet in the room. Just down the hall in room 428 is the cowboy who paces the room and a doctor who has been reported tucking guests in and kissing them on the forehead. There is also the poltergeist room on the 4th floor, Lucy, Eddie, Paul, and Flora Stanley who all haunt the Concert Hall, and the ghosts of deceased guests found dead in their beds who now haunt the Carraige House. To really get a good scare, watch the episode of the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures where the crew does an overnight lockdown on the Stanley property and provokes each of these ghosts to make themselves known.

Fun Fact: Dumb and Dumber was filmed here at the Stanley Hotel. During that time, Jim Carey stayed (or, attempted to stay) on the property for the filming of the movie. Placed in Room 217 (Ms. Wilson’s room), Carey had gone upstairs to go to sleep. As the story goes, 3 hours later he came running downstairs and outside, frightened beyond belief. He would not tell anyone what had happened and he absolutely refused to stay there again. When a comedian’s not ready to joke about it, it must be serious!

Twice as many people will die this Halloween because the looniparti will think they failed to appease thier god. Hitlery Clinton will be sacraficing more than chickens to Mardoch. Bill hasn’t spoken to her since her book came out against his advice and he threw it in the trash. Karma is beautiful.
