Overpopulation, Pandemics and Pestilence But a Brighter Future

The coronavirus is still with us and, of course, there are many theories as to why the virus has come about. Some will go as far as saying this is a sign which will lead to the end of the world, and they will quote passages from the Bible confirming this

But if we think about it there have been plagues, pestilence and the like throughout history and mankind has somehow survived.

One of the things plagues, pestilence and viruses do is reduce the population. During the Black Death in the 14th century, for example, about one-third of all human beings died. 

Maybe there is a lesson here. Perhaps nature is telling us something.

I remember my mother-in-law, who was German, often said that wars came about primarily to reduce the world population. She was a country woman who ran a farm on her own, as her husband died when my wife was just four years old.

She understood nature, the seasons and how the world needed more and more of everything.

Various nasty things can keep the population in check, it doesn’t have to be wars.

If we look at the world population numbers they have increased from 682 million in 1700 to 7349 million in 2015. 

The UN, in 2017, estimated that by 2050 the population could reach 9735 million. The question is, can we sustain this?

Maybe the coronavirus is a wake up call. Should we be controlling population growth and finding new sources of food? If not, perhaps those Bible quotes might just be true! 

I took a break from writing this post and by chance / coincidence came across an article from way back, which made me smile. This was about Professor Wickramasinghe who is a mathematician, astronomer and astrobiologist.

The Professor claims that various outbreaks of illnesses on Earth are of extra terrestrial origins, including the 1918 flu pandemic and certain outbreaks of polio and mad cow disease.

He also believes that life itself originated in outer space. 

So, perhaps the coronavirus is not what we think … no, surely that’s a little too far fetched, isn’t it?

But, whatever, our lives will be changed because of the coronavirus. Hopefully this will bring about the best in human nature: the caring, sharing, kindness and appreciation that is being noticed more and more.
