My stepmother Cindy visited Iceland and one of the places she was very interested in seeing was the Gatklettur (Hellnar Arch). A beautiful natural wonder. I have never been to Iceland, but I have flown over Iceland, if that counts. Nah, I know, it doesn’t count. When I asked my stepmom about Iceland, she told me that she heard about 3 cryptid stories that occur near and around Gatklettur (Hellnar Arch). But, first let me tell you about Gatklettur. Gatklettur is located in the small town of Arnarstapi within the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. To get a better idea of the location, it is approximately 2 1/2 hours northwest of the capital city of Reykjavík. In the article, I will focus on 3 cryptids. The people of Iceland are strong believers of cryptids, since they see and even at times interact with the Huldufolk (Hidden People) also known as elves. Icelanders have great respect of these elves and try not to disturb them. When Cindy visited Iceland, she said there was so much to see. Some of the places she visited was the Bárðar Saga Snæfellsáss Statue and Arnarstapi Lighthouse. Some nearby attractions on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula include Ytri Tunga Beach. Cindy saw plenty of seals at Ytri Tunga Beach. One of the sights she really enjoyed was Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall. Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall was one of the settings for the TV series Game of Thrones.

Now let’s discuss some of the cryptids that hang out by Gatklettur (Hellnar Arch). They are:

THE SHORE LADDIE
The Shore Laddie has been seen a few times at the Hellnar Arch. According to tour guide Magnus Arnason, the Shore Laddie is an herbivorous creature. Magnus says the cryptid is harmless and will shy away from the sight of people. Magnus says that people want to make the Shore Laddie into a dreadful creature and make claim that the creature will eat sheep and pregnant women. Magnus says this is all hogwash. The Shore Laddie just like the elves of Iceland is seen frequently. There have been 3 sightings of the Shore Laddie at the Hellnar Arch. Another legend is that the Shore Laddie is seen most often during sheep breeding season and it has been accused of impregnating ewes and creating disabled monstrous lambs. Once again, Magnus says this is all made up fables. Magnus truly believes in the Shore Laddie and encountered one when he was 14 years old. The Shore Laddie came out of a hole in his father’s farm and made a yelping noise and ran away, scared to death. The Shore Laddie was scared because the creature encountered a human being. That human being was no other than Magnus. Some residents say the Shore Laddie has aggressive behavior. Magnus says this is not true. When Shore Laddies encounter humans, they will run to the ocean to get away from humans.

THE HROKKALL
A local named Kristofer Helga told Cindy another cryptid that is seen near Hellnar Arch is the Hrokkall. The Hrokkall is an eel with iron-hard scales and razor-sharp fins. It is 2 feet in length and lives in stagnant ponds, polluted waters, and occasionally rivers. The Hrokkall has been recently seen along the shoreline and seen at the Hellnar Arch. Legend has it, that the creature will secrete a corrosive poison, that it can utilize to burrow through the earth. They lie in wait for someone to step into the waters in which they live, then wrap themselves around the victim’s legs. Back in 1932, two local men came upon a woman writhing on the ground and around her neck was the dreaded Hrokkall. The Hrokkall was choking the woman, and she was on the brink of death. One of the locals that found her, pulled out a big knife and sliced the Hrokkall. The Hrokkall slithered away into a hole. If the Hrokkall wasn’t stabbed by the local, it would have proceeded to slice the woman through her flesh and bone, she would have been decapitated. Sheep are said to be safe from the Hrökkáll because their legs are too narrow for them to gain a hold. Kristofer says that the Hrokkall will not hesitate in attacking a human. Special Note: Hrökkáll is the Icelandic word for the Electrophorus electricus, a species of electric eel.

THE HELLNAR ARCH MERMAN
According to tourist Jokull Olafsson, the Hellnar Arch Merman is 6 feet tall. Most people that have spotted the Hellnar Arch Merman say that he is very hideous looking. The stomach hangs down and overlaps his groin area. The creature also has long hind legs that are positioned underneath it. The creature also has short arms with claws, sort of like a Tyrannosaurus Rex has short arms. The skin of this creature is described as larvae skin. The skin is transparent. The eyes are large, and the Hellnar Arch Merman is known to stare with its big buggy eyes. The creature also has saber long sharp teeth. Special Note: The Merman is also called “Hafmaður”, meaning “Sea Man”. It is said that when a sailor sees a Merman in the sea, it is a sign that a storm is approaching or that someone will die. They will sometimes come up on small inlets or secluded beaches to escape bad weather, like storms. They most often come ashore at night and will avoid crowds and sharp noises. If seen on land, it is considered bad luck to harass them. They will try to drive men into the sea and can be very ferocious. Bullets cannot harm them. The Merman are known to just brush off bullets from their fur. Jokull says that in 1847, four Merman went on a fisherman’s boat and dragged 6 fishermen into the sea and drowned them. The locals believe that these Mermen ate the fisherman. A few people have seen a Merman that sits on top of the arch and when people approach the arch, the Merman will jump into the sea to avoid the humans. This Merman is now known as the Hellnar Arch Merman.
