3 Great Places to Retire in South America

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

South America is rapidly becoming popular as a retirement destination — especially for American citizens who are considering a lower cost of living. Many South American countries are enjoying economic growth and the quality of life in many areas is higher than it once was.

Here are three popular retirement destinations in South America

Brazil

The largest South American country, Brazil’s official language is Portuguese, but English is widely spoken. The country has a lot to offer because of its vastness. Retirees can enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities and sites to explore.

Climate

Brazil is a large and varied nation where the weather conditions depend on which area you visit or live. Temperatures are usually comfortable year-round, especially in the North East — an area that is a particular favorite for expats. Head further south and the temperature is more balanced. Go further south, the seasons are distinct and even has occasional snowfalls.

Healthcare

Many of the public hospitals are overcrowded and underfunded. Ideally, people who retire in Brazil, especially Americans, make arrangements for medical insurance and visit the private medical facilities.

  • Meal $8.11
  • Meal for 2 $37.18
  • Milk $1.23
  • Basic monthly utilities $103.00

Argentina

Argentina’s financial meltdown in 2001 forced the cost of living to drop and ever since it has attracted American expats in large numbers. With the economy still mending, the rich cultural landscape continues to call to retirees who are searching for a scenic and sophisticated place to live. Most retirees choose to live in Buenos Aires and others, seeking more of an outdoor lifestyle, select cities like Bariloche, Mendoza and Chubut.

Climate

Since Argentina is below the equator, the seasons are the reverse of North America. January and February is summer and the weather is hot and humid. Winter is damp and chilly with rainfall being 39 inches in Buenos Aires

Healthcare

Argentina has a well-developed national health system that is available to everyone — even foreigners. There are frequently long waiting lists for treatment and operations, so many people choose private healthcare. Private physicians, clinics and hospitals expect immediate cash payment and a doctor visit will cost anywhere from $17 to $50 — for a specialist.

Visa

Retirement visas are issued to people that have a monthly income of at least AR$2,000. To apply, the requirement is four standard-size passport photos, a birth certificate and a valid passport.

Cost of Living

  • Meal $8.67
  • Meal for 2 $30.90
  • Milk $1.05
  • Basic utilities $67.12

Uruguay

With one of the best, i.e., lowest, crime rates in South America, Uruguay also doesn’t suffer from hurricanes or earthquakes. Retirees looking for a destination that combines a low cost of living with a safe environment, find Montevideo and Colonia welcoming.

Climate

Fairly moderate year-round

Healthcare Costs

Both foreigners and nationals with low income are entitled to free medical care. Most retirees purchase insurance from a local hospital that covers their care and costs roughly $65 to $70 a month, per insured

Visa

Any visitor can petition for a residency visa as long as they own property, have a bank account and proof of income of over $6,000 a year

Cost of Living

  • Meal (Inexpensive local restaurant) $11.50
  • Meal (Mid-range restaurant) $42.95
  • Milk (regular)j $1.01
  • Basic monthly utilities $170.00
