Police responding to a armed robbery at a Wendy’s Tuesday night, when the suspect appeared to have a gun. A shootout ensure, with Omaha police shooting 30 times. In the aftermath, they discovered they had shot Bryce Dion, the sound technician with the television show “Cops”.

The robbery suspect Cortez Washington, 32, was also shot and died a short time later. It turns out Washington has a air gun, all the shots fired came from police gun fire.

Omaha police say the “Cops” crew member who was shot and killed during a police shootout with an armed robbery suspect was hit by gunfire from police … NOT from the suspect’s weapon.

Dion was a 7 year veteran of the Cops TV show crew. Cops Producersstated that all crew members are issued bullet proof vests. However, it’s not clear if Dion had his vest on, or where the police officers bullets struck him.

UPDATE – Its been confirmed that Dion was wearing his vest. The bullet that struck Dion allegedly hit his arm, traveled under his vest, and entered the chest. The suspect was on parole, and boasted an extensive criminal history. And finally, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer still insists that the airsoft gun the suspect used “sounded like the real thing.”
