Yes, maybe he should have shown his hands. Yes, maybe it was suicide by cop. We can only SPECULATE. But let’s not ignore the central issue. The real question is this, “When is it reasonable for law enforcement to use deadly force”. Clearly there is a double standard for them and us. Had this been an average citizen who shot and killed someone claiming they were scared because they couldn’t see the victims hands, he would be in jail awaiting trial for 1st degree murder. Twenty years ago this whould have been true for the cop. Even today our military is not allowed to take such action toward civilians during times of war. But as we are learning, in today’s Amerika, police enjoy special privileges.
I will not pretend to arm chair quarterback every police shooting. But I do know this. Had I shot and killed an unarmed man simply out of an unreasonable fear for my life – I would be haunted for the rest of my life. And the fact that they justify it is troubling on many levels. Are these the kinds of men you want to patrol our streets? Men who shoot first and ask questions later? Men who have no conscience toward their hyper-authoritarian actions? Yes it’s a hard job, so maybe they shouldn’t do it unless they are man enough to live with the risks involved.
The police released this video for one reason. To announce to the public that failure to obey law enforcement is now a capital offense with punishment to to meted out immediately. In the light of all the other police shootings, they want us to take this as a warning that their power and authority cannot and will not be questioned – under penalty of death.
This problem is not a BLM problem. it is a police state problem that effects us all. If refusing to obey law enforcement brings the real possibility of execution – we have descended into a fascist abyss.
