A G20 rally of around 10,000 people began in early Saturday afternoon and turned violent.  Some protesters clashed with Toronto police.  Police cars were set on fire, business vandalized.  Subway and transit were halted with some venues reportedly on lockdown.  Some news reports said police used tear gas for the first time in the City of Toronto, rubber bullets were also used.

Digital Journal reported that a common violent tactic called Black Bloc was used by the G20 protesters.  According to wikipedia, ”A black bloc is a tactic for protests and marches, whereby individuals wear black clothing, scarfs, ski masks, motorcycle helmets with padding or other face-concealing items and often carry some sort of shields and batons.”

It is unclear how many protesters have engaged in violent demonstrations.  The Raw Story reported that more than 500 people have been arrested in Toronto after a night of rioting.

FT.com says  many residents questioned why massive spending on security had failed to prevent violence.  Canada’s prime minister, Stephen Harper has faced criticism over the estimated C$930m (US$899m, €726m, £597m) security bill for the G20 and G8 summit.
