(Before It's News)

In a spy espionage plot ripped straight out of Kevin Costner’s 1987 movie “No Way Out“,  ten people have been charged in the U.S. with spying on key military and political personnel for the Russian Intelligence Service.

AP reported that the FBI announced the arrests of 10 suspects Monday, and an 11th person allegedly involved in the Russian spy ring was arrested Tuesday in Cyprus.  Court papers said the operation goes back as far as the 1990s and many of the suspects were tracked for years.

CBN.com says Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz on Monday called this “the tip of the iceberg” of a conspiracy of Russia’s intelligence service

According to NY Times, Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin brought up the subject at a meeting with former President Bill Clinton.  Putin told Clinton,

“You have come to Moscow at the exact right time.  Your police have gotten carried away, putting people in jail.”

But Putin offered no further comment on the specifics of these alleged spies.  Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denounced the U.S. actions as ”unfounded” and pursued “unseemly” goals.  He pointed out that U.S. authorities announced the arrests days after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had burger with President Obama in the White House.

The people who allegedly spied for Russia posed as innocent civilians while trying to learn about U.S. weapons, diplomatic strategy and politics.  AP reported that Oleg Gordievsky, a former deputy head of the KGB in London who defected in 1985, said Russia probably has about 50 deep-cover couples spying inside the United States.
