Political Jackassery Abounds in Sunland Park, New Mexico

When a stranger entered his office and pulled off her top, married Mayoral candidate Gerardo Hernandez says it crossed his mind it could be a setup. But then she started dancing for him, and dangling her breasts in front of his face, Hernandez decided to let her stay.

It reminds me of a warning that Al Bundy gave his son on an episode of ‘Married With Children’: When men get horny they don’t have the sense to say no.

Scandals and dirty politics have defined Sunland Park, New Mexico [map], for long time. It’s become so bad that many residents have gotten tired of the corruption and incompetence that has come to define the politicians of the city; and state politicians have started requesting investigations.

For example, the City Hall has seen raids by state police three times in as many years; and the mayor has acknowledged signing a million dollar contract last year while drunk. If that makes you exclaim “WTF?!,” you can image how the residents feel.

“It’s been happening for years,” grocery store cashier Roberto Perez recently told Las Vegas’ CBS Local. “They are all the same. … They just squander the money because it’s not theirs. They don’t give a f*ck.”

The political jackassery went on full display last year when Mayor Martin Resendiz nearly came to blows with the mayor pro tem after council members questioned the mayor’s attendance. (Perhaps they should meet in the playground after school.) The city council also took issue with his approval of a $47,000 buyout for the city manager.

CBS reports that state Rep. Mary Helen Garcia, D-Las Cruces, last year asked the state to take over government in the southern New Mexico town that borders Texas and Mexico. Garcia said she’s not heard back from the state, but may follow up after the mayoral elections next month.

“It’s always the same,” said resident Beatriz Perez. The politicians “keep saying they are going to do stuff, and they do nothing. It’s like no one cares about us.”
