Open Letter to "birthers" : SHOCKING revelation

Today, my fiance pointed out an article that she noticed on a news website here in Phoenix – something about Obama not being on the ballot this November. I thought to myself, “What the..?!?” Now as anyone who has been following national politics knows, there is a sizable “birther” movement in the US – birthers being defined as people who believe that Obama was not born on American soil, but in a foreign country, most likely Kenya, Africa – and particularly in Arizona. Our Sheriff here in Maricopa County, the infamous Joe Arpaio has stated that he thinks Obama’s birth certificate is a forgery and even conducted a 6 month investigation to “prove” his claim. Never mind that as the Sheriff, that is quite far removed from what his “sheriff-ly” duties should be or the fact that he himself is under investigation by the US Justice Dept for alleged wrongdoings. The sad truth, as the article my wife pointed out below clearly shows, is that some people are REALLY hung up on this :

Now being somewhat of an independent thinker myself, and someone who fully believes that our government is as corrupt as they come, I started wondering just why it is that I get so upset about this whole situation? I mean, what if he really was born in Kenya? What if he wasn’t born on American soiL? What if?

Then I thought deeper about it and wondered what the intent behind that rule – the one that says the president MUST have been born on US soil – really is. Is it to make sure that the person doesn’t have any allegiance to some foreign country? I mean, what about those kids born to soldiers who are serving overseas? Do we make exceptions for them, saying that because they were born on a military base, that constitutes American soil? And what about some kid who was born in a foreign country, and then came to the US when they were like 6 months old – is it realistic at all to think that person, when they become an adult, has any allegiance to their birth country? And what about people born in America who then travel abroad, picking up all kinds of crazy ideas and possibly allegiances to other nations or causes – they get to run when they come back just because they were born here?

Then I thought deeper still. Ok, so the only people who should be able to run are those who were born here – whose ancestors are from here. Well, guess what? That rules out every white man and black man in the entire country. Know why? Because 400 years ago, there WEREN’T any white or black people here (none to speak of anyway) – there were only Native Americans. And they are the only ones who can claim to be truly American; who can say that all of their ancestors were born here; who can claim American heritage that none of us white or back people can, right? But wait a minute…

Where did Native Americans come from? Did their race really originate here on the North American continent? Seems I remember reading something…. something about them, and indeed every human being having come ultimately from one place, WAY back in the human family tree… where was that again.. oh – wait – that’s right – AFRICA! As much as all the birthers just HATE to admit it, scientists, anthropologists and all the other truly smart people who know about these things are in agreement that the entire human race shares common ancestors who came from the continent of Africa. That’s right – all of us. I am not even going to post links here because it is such common knowledge now that anyone who wants to dispute it is just being repugnant.

Now I am sure that there are birthers and others everywhere who will rally to round up scientists who dispute this; who will stand and say “That’s not the point – we’re talking about the Consitution!’; or give any number of reasons why their argument is just. I am not saying that their argument is unjust. I am saying that the spirit behind it has racial overtones that reflect negatively on every American. I am saying that it is the height of hypocrisy for any white man to stand up and say this stuff when less than 200 years ago, it was the Native Americans who owned all this land. I am saying that there are so many things of such greater importance that we ought to be worried about other than where Barack Obama was born. I am begging, and pleading with those members of our society who think this issue is so important to just let it go and find something else to rally around.

I for one am embarassed by all of this “birther” stuff. And I have to wonder to myself if Barack Obama was white, and spoke with absolutely no foreign accent, just like he does now, would all of this really be an issue? As a white male, I can honestly say no – no, I don’t think it would. What do you think? Or maybe a better question is, have you really thought about it? That’s all I really want to know, and all I really ask. Please – think about it. And preferrably, BEFORE you speak.
