Washington, DC—The Obama Whitehouse has relentlessly sought telephone records of Americans not suspected of crimes but for fishing expeditions and pure political retribution. The obvious intent is for their political operatives to find material on political enemies and news reporters that can be used to commit extortion.
No mater how you look at this phone record abuse is both unlawful and very ugly. If Barack Obama can do this so can any president. It must be stopped cold and those responsible punished to the fullest extent of the law.
The Whitehouse claims they needed the unbridled access to the private information of millions of telephone customers to investigate terrorism. That’s pure hogwash. We have put into place a proper legal process with court subpoenas and search warrants for such snooping. The Obama Administration has instead has operated in this area like lawless pirates.
Before cell phones were available Americans used landlines in their homes and offices. There were never records kept of each call unless it was long distance. The only way law enforcement could get the information about a landline subscriber’s phone was with a court order. Once that was obtained the law enforcement agency was allowed to put a “pen-Register” device or a “tap” on the phone line to capture the information or actual calls. Americans who were not involved in criminal activities were pretty secure that their phone calls were somewhat private.
Our modern cell phone companies keep detailed records of every call; it’s duration and even the location where it was originated. It’s somewhat simple for nosy hacker’s to deceive the cell phone providers in order to get customer’s illicit duplicate bills with all the private information. However, government agencies simply request and the information is given to them freely. When it comes to your telephone conversations the Fourth Amendment is dead.
Consumers however can simply demand the cell phone carriers end their established practice of detailed records and instead keep track only of airtime used to make the calls. The 800 numbers are different and have other issues.
Giving government simple and unbridled access to our phone call data is un-American and just plain wrong. Our cell phone providers can be forced to change their ways through legislation and every level in every state. They would have to give consumers the choice on just what kind of billing records are kept and for how long.
Perhaps it’s time to call our elected representatives. In the meantime savvy cell phone providers could break ranks and offer privacy to their customers instead of facilitating police state fascism. We must do something before things get much worse.
