Media lies and Damn Lies About Debra Milke Continue!

Phoenix, AZ—As a possible retrial of Debra Milke looms some amateurish local media organizations are influencing the national media with old lies, half-truths, plagiarized garbage that has taken on a life of its own.

Local TV news is not what it once was. They no longer have the audience they once enjoyed. The quality of local news is now pathetic. They can’t seem to keep up with the truth these days. The national news organizations too often rely on the material given to them by local news affiliates.

Let me begin by saying that I covered this mess as an investigative producer and documentary filmmaker since I first interviewed Milke as she was being booked into the Maricopa County Jail on December 3, 1989. She still had sticky fingerprint ink on her fingers. I began this at the request of Channel 10 News in Phoenix that was part of the CBS family back then. I used a hidden tape recorder to capture any incriminating or other statements she’d make.

Milke emotionally and strongly denied involvement with or telling police she had anything to do with the killing of her son. Days later now disgraced former detective Armando Saldate wrote a report she claimed to have privately confessed to him. There was no tape, a single witness nor a signed document. Not even the routine required signed waiver form. Saldate claimed it was in the immediate couple of hours that transpired before I interviewed on tape! Saldate’s report and false testimony is why her conviction was set aside.

It just so happens that there was never a shred of evidence linking Milke to her son’s murder but Saldate’s fraudulent claims.

Let me make this clear, I’m not Milke’s friend, lover, relative or investigator. I am a third party observer that has reported the facts for the entire time. Had I a single scintilla of evidence connecting her with this crime I’d have reported that to the world.

There were immediate lies that began as the murder was discovered and arrests made that were reported far and wide. The source of the lies was Mark Henry Milkenow known as Arizona Milke. Mr. Milke was the boy’s father.

Mr. Milke was a paroled ex-con that kept hard drugs around his son when he was not in jail or in a psychiatric facility. He threatened his ex-wife and son regularly causing them to feel for their lives. Needless to say he contributed nothing to Christopher’s support.

The media never bothered to learn about Mr. Milke at least in the beginning. Since the police were not talking members of the media were desperate for details or information about this huge unfolding news story. For a period of time Mark Milke became a media star by spreading gossip, lies and hatred. his disinformation was repeated over and over by the media. Most of his ranting never saw light in the courtroom. Mr. Milke was not a witness simply because he could not offer any useful information to the prosecution or the defense!

Below are the most often repeated lies, half-truths and outrageous accounts. Most of these things were never in contention at trial or in police reports.
Media stories claim Debra Milke dressed her son in his favorite outfit and sent him off with his killers on a pretext that he was going to see Santa Claus. This was a great piece of fictional writing that has been plagiarized redundantly since the beginning. The fact is that Christopher already made a visit with his mother days before.

The child wanted to go again and James Styers who had a daughter, Wendy the same age offered to take him once again. Unbeknownst to Milke Styers took the boy and later picked up his life long friend Roger Scott and they took the boy out and murdered him.

James Styers was never Milke’s boyfriend that was just wrong another assumption made by the media. Milke had a boyfriend and she had no romantic interest in Styers. Styers did want to have a relationship but that never happened.

Debra Milke was not coerced into confessing and she was not read her rights. Saldate had a conversation with Milke but in never included a confession. Saldate however made a false written report days later claiming she confessed murder to him.

Debra Milke is not a convicted killer! She is absolutely innocent and deserves that presumption going into a new trial. At this moment she’s never been convicted of anything at all.

Mark Henry Milke now known as Arizona Milke is not a witness for either the prosecution or defense. Mr. Milke is a long suffering mental patient, convicted felon, drug addict and alcoholic that has shamelessly capitalized on his sons murder. Had he been any kind of a father the child and his mother would not have fled from his threats, abuse and other reprehensible conduct.

Some in the media organizations are taking umbrage that a jury at her first trial convicted Milke. The conviction was set aside because that trial was not fair and key evidence was hidden from the jury. That would have certainly ended in an acquittal had those jurors known the facts.

Bullets were found in Debra Milke’s purse. The fact was established that Styers left a box of bullets on a coffee table where Styer’s little daughter and Christopher were playing and Debra angrily removed them for obvious safety reasons.

1 The murder of Christopher Milke was indeed a horrific, despicable and cruel act. The two men responsible for this heartbreaking crime are now in the eleventh hour of their appeals and will soon face the executioner.

Debra Milke was living in a difficult situation at Styer’s two-bedroom apartment. She and Christopher were cramped into a single bedroom. Styers was using her car as his own and in addition to collecting rent he was consuming the food she’d buy at the store for her and her child.

At the time of Christopher’s Murder Debra was able to find a better paying job across town in Tempe, AZ at the John Alden Life Insurance Company. She also had just leased a new two bedroom apartment for her and her son and registered him for licensed day care/kindergarten. This young mother would be further away from her abusive ex-husband and Christopher would be safe.

Styers was very upset when he learned Debra was moving he told her she needed his protection reminding her he had a gun. Debra hated Styers keeping gun around the children and reminded him about that serious safety hazard.

Styers finally seemed to adjust to the reality that Debra was moving and it was at that point that he offered to take Christopher to see Santa once again. It was at this point that Styers took the boy but instead of seeing Santa he was executed by Scott and his friend Scott.

Styers and Scott both accused each other of shooting the boy but they both fled the scene and covered up the crime until their stories unraveled. The interesting thing was that police tape recorded their statements.

Saldate later claimed that Debra Milke did not want her interview recorded. I have to ask since when do police not record? The police have and routinely employ all kinds of recording devices in investigations of every kind. They always used hidden microphones for making misdemeanor prostitution arrests. Former detective Saldate’s motive for not recording the Milke interview is only too clear to everyone especially the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

When I was assigned to interview Debra Milke at the jail it never entered my mind for a second not to record that interview! I taped it and that tape was broadcast to television viewers all over Arizona.
