Atheist ‘Mega-Churches’ Take Root Across US, World

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It looked like a typical Sunday morning at any mega-church. Hundreds packed in for more than an hour of rousing music, an inspirational sermon, a reading and some quiet reflection. The only thing missing was God.

Dozens of gatherings dubbed “atheist mega-churches” by supporters and detractors are springing up around the U.S. after finding success in Great Britain earlier this year. The movement fueled by social media and spearheaded by two prominent British comedians is no joke.

On Sunday, the inaugural Sunday Assembly in Los Angeles attracted more than 400 attendees, all bound by their belief in non-belief. Similar gatherings in San Diego, Nashville, New York and other U.S. cities have drawn hundreds of atheists seeking the camaraderie of a congregation without religion or ritual.

The founders, British duo Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans, are currently on a tongue-in-cheek “40 Dates, 40 Nights” tour around the U.S. and Australia to drum up donations and help launch dozens of Sunday Assemblies. They hope to raise more than $800,000 that will help atheists launch their pop-up congregations around the world.

They don’t bash believers but want to find a new way to meet likeminded people, engage in the community and make their presence more visible in a landscape dominated by faith.

Jones got the first inkling for the idea while leaving a Christmas carol concert six years ago.

“There was so much about it that I loved, but it’s a shame because at the heart of it, it’s something I don’t believe in,” Jones said. “If you think about church, there’s very little that’s bad. It’s singing awesome songs, hearing interesting talks, thinking about improving yourself and helping other people — and doing that in a community with wonderful relationships. What part of that is not to like?”

The movement dovetails with new studies showing an increasing number of Americans are drifting from any religious affiliation.

The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life released a study last year that found 20 percent of Americans say they have no religious affiliation, an increase from 15 percent in the last five years. Pew researchers stressed, however, that the category also encompassed majorities of people who said they believed in God but had no ties with organized religion and people who consider themselves “spiritual” but not “religious.”

Sunday Assembly — whose motto is Live Better, Help Often, Wonder More — taps into that universe of people who left their faith but now miss the community church provided, said Phil Zuckerman, a professor of secular studies at Pitzer College in Claremont.

It also plays into a feeling among some atheists that they should make themselves more visible. For example, last December, an atheist in Santa Monica created an uproar — and triggered a lawsuit — when he set up a godless display amid Christian nativity scenes that were part of a beloved, decades-old tradition.

“In the U.S., there’s a little bit of a feeling that if you’re not religious, you’re not patriotic. I think a lot of secular people say, ‘Hey, wait a minute. We are charitable, we are good people, we’re good parents and we are just as good citizens as you and we’re going to start a church to prove it,” said Zuckerman. “It’s still a minority, but there’s enough of them now.”

That impulse, however, has raised the ire of those who have spent years pushing back against the idea that atheism itself is a religion.

“The idea that you’re building an entire organization based on what you don’t believe, to me, sounds like an offense against sensibility,” said Michael Luciano, a self-described atheist who was raised Roman Catholic but left when he became disillusioned.

“There’s something not OK with appropriating all of this religious language, imagery and ritual for atheism.”

That sentiment didn’t seem to detract from the excitement Sunday at the inaugural meeting in Los Angeles.

Hundreds of atheists and atheist-curious packed into a Hollywood auditorium for a boisterous service filled with live music, moments of reflection and an “inspirational talk, ” and some stand-up comedy by Jones, the movement’s co-founder.

During the service, attendees stomped their feet, clapped their hands and cheered as Jones and Evans led the group through rousing renditions of “Lean on Me,” ”Here Comes the Sun” and other hits that took the place of gospel songs. Congregants dissolved into laughter at a get-to-know-you game that involved clapping and slapping the hands of the person next to them and applauded as members of the audience spoke about community service projects they had started in LA.

At the end, volunteers passed cardboard boxes for donations as attendees mingled over coffee and pastries and children played on the floor.

For atheist Elijah Senn, the morning was perfect.

“I think the image that we have put forward in a lot of ways has been a scary, mean, we want to tear down the walls, we want to do destructive things kind of image is what a lot of people have of us,” he said. “I’m really excited to be able to come together and show that it’s not about destruction. It’s about making things and making things better.”

These mega-atheist churches will merge with a the coming Universal Church promoted by the NWO’s. A new Universal Church that will basically say, “anything goes” as far as aberrant behavior. It will have the Antichrist at its helm, and be an abomination in the eyes of God. Don’t be fooled! Jesus is Lord.

      • DOOMSDAY!

        I AGREE!

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY PLAN!

      • Lord

        Oh, NO, dr. Fluffy!
We WANT THE SAME HOARDING RIGHTS AS YOU MEMBERS OF chris-SCUM-DUMB have had for over 200 years!

We will apply for .. and get….. OR ELSE…THE SAME 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit tax-exempt statuses that ALL RELIGIONS in the united FASCIST states of MILITARY TERROR get right now!

So we can pay ourselves BIG FAT SALARIES and AMASS REAL WEALTH, THE SAME AS The Liberty Council Action Group, The Roman Catholic church, the Mormon church, OR ELSE, WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT YOUR SIDE DOES NOT GET THEM ANYMORE, here, in the united FASCIST states of MILITARY TERROR!
        That IS OUR PLAN!

Now, that Dr. Fluffy is something to be VERY TERRIFIED OF, eh, christian HOARDER-KILLER!

You are without a doubt the most ignorant and asinine commenter on this site. I can’t tell whether you are psychotic, or a paid government troll. But one thing is for sure, you have a very limited mental capacity. The Holy Spirit will deal with you and your kind. And I pity you, because the torment that awaits reprobates like you is indescribable.

        • Ghost

Big talk for someone from Idaho?

        • Fr.Duffy Fighting 69th

In your comment below you mocked the Holy Spirit. Do you have any notion of what that means for your soul?

You gentile anti-semitics just can’t stop degenerating can you Headmaster? “This will show mommy I’m right just like TV comediens!”

Anything goes? I don’t know any atheist that thinks that way. If you get your morals from the bible I am scared of you. I am a thousand times more moral than your imaginary war lord in the sky.

You have brought the sin of Pride to astronomical levels. I pity you in that farcical reality you have created around you self.

They’ve already made an international “bible.”
A New New Testament: Are You Serious? 03/17/13 Another new “Bible” was released. This one is just the New Testament. It is a direct attack on the authority of the Bible, as this New Testament adds books to it! This is all part of the process of creating a one-world religion. These modern “Bibles” both remove and add verses and books to change authentic Christianity and doctrine.

As we grow closer to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, these apostates will get worse and more bold in the attack. Those that are genuine with God will stick with God’s word for us today in English, which is the King James Bible. God has protected His word in spite of all the attacks on His word. We still have the pure word of God.

“Here is the list of new books added to the New Testament by this council:
        • The Prayer of Thanksgiving
•The Prayer of the Apostle Paul
        •The Thunder: Perfect Mind
        •The Gospel of Thomas
        •The Gospel of Mary
        •The Gospel of Truth
•The Acts of Paul and Thecla
•The Letter of Peter to Philip
        •The Secret Revelation of John
•The First, Second, Third, and Fourth Books of the Odes of Solomon”

Please be thankful that God has preserved His word for us. We can trust in the King James Bible as His word to us in English. The false translations are all around us along with people who attack the authority of

What do you expect from self defining gentile freaks? Now all we have to do is wait for the self mortication rallies and then the backlashes of Jew burning on their despisers behalf followed by their state enforced self mortification and municipal breeding out the hate drives. Yada yada yada.

And yes, the fundie gentiles will be soon joined by their fundie christian parents into uniting with Islam and outlawing of science as racist.

    • Corey Ander

      Atheist having a Mega-Church = CONTRADICTION .

The notion of people who don’t believe in God having a church was too much for some people to wrap their heads around and a Huge Contradiction … don’t you guys think so ?

      • Pix

Not really. While sunday congregations would be a contradiction if they were preaching anti religion, but that is not the case. It’s a means of meeting other like minded people and forming community. We are social creatures, getting together with like minded people is exactly what is missing in atheists lives.

Some atheists like myself are spiritually minded despite the lack of belief there is a giant invisible sky fairy. The nature of our reality is Darwinian, a dog eat dog world where people trample over other people to get to the top. Spirituality is a vehicle to raise yourself above that. Most people have a natural spirituality where they are selfless and good, despite being vilified and bullied by pretenders, those who are holier than thou religious, who in reality are little more than sanctimonious bullies.

        • dimwit

          Giant invisible sky fairy?

What is this? The year 1300 ??? When was the last time you went to a church that tried to teach you about a sky-daddy? No wonder you’ve lost your way — if that’s what they’re teaching people in your neck of the woods.

Spiritually minded? You?! Spiritually minded people are not pompous, condescending, closet-bigots like yourself.

        • Mirabolin

Because they can’t stop destroying social ties as “That’s RACIS!!!!” if they were intellectually they would just point out that all religions are is communities but the anti0-racist fundies need a cult that can be enforced globally. This is why they will just end up all converting Islam.

      • BEEF SUPREME

        Corey Ander asked:

“The notion of people who don’t believe in God having a church was too much for some people to wrap their heads around and a Huge Contradiction… don’t you guys think so?”

Absolutely not. It makes perfect sense for atheists to have a church. Atheism is nothing but a religion for people who hate the Most High.

An actual ‘atheist’ — someone who does not believe in the Almighty — does not exist. There are only those who PRETEND that He does not exist as a mask for the fact that they hate Him. ‘Atheists’ know perfectly well that He exists, just as demons know perfectly well that He exists. The difference between the atheists and the demons is that the demons know Him well enough to actually fear Him.

    • Bond007

Why don’t the atheist’s and the homo’s all go to Church together and butt ram each other?

      Hahahahahaha

Hey??? How about Pastor Homo Elton John and Lesbian Rachael Maddow with Atheists Jody Foster?

Maybe Chris Matthews could go on stage and demonstrate his zeal to perform oral sex on Obama?

Or Bill Maher can jazz it up with the atheist’s on how God is a big jack ass and Jew Boy Billy is the smartest anus in the world????

Oh yea. I’m just warmin up!

      • You\\\'re intellectually impotent

        just warming up huh?

I fail to see any nuggets of hilarity in your ramblings.

I think you just expressing repressed emotions from that pastor that molested you.

      • really

“Why don’t the atheist’s and the homo’s all go to Church together and butt ram each other?”

Too many priests and popes already do that…we don’t need more.

      • Sagan

You can tell you get your morals from the bible. Your are a true Christian.

    • MSG Chicken

Why do they call it a church then? Call it something else like MEGA HELL HOUSE or something.

Just like gays like to call their abomination “marriage”. Call it something else. Don’t use Christian terms.

      • Ghost

Marriage is not a Christian term… It sort of pre-existed Christianity by several millennium

I like the idea of Atheist church… It would be a great tax avoidance scheme.. Like the Christian Churches get..

        • Fr.Duffy Fighting 69th

Yada, yada. Always the same lame analysis from Ghost. Can’t you come up with something new?

        • Pix

          Fr.Duffy

Ghost is correct, marriage has nothing to do with Christianity. If you marry in a church you still have to sign a secular document that legalises it, because it is a legal arrangement not a Christian one.

        • Ghost

Yep same anaylisis…. Facts trump Fiction

      • Auto Exec

I love all these comments from ‘Christians’ – you all sound so forgiving and caring as a group that I simply cannot understand why we atheists don’t want to associate with your ‘Caring’ God. btw – didn’t your ‘Caring’ God just destroy 10,000+ worshippers in the Phillipines.

God only exists because you have faith that it/she/he exists – and that my friends is in your own minds only. You poor unfortunate misguided  Numpties.

        • HereAmI

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him, neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned”.
“The spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive, because the world seeth him not, neither knoweth him”.
“He that is of God heareth God’s words, ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God”.
This day these scriptures are fulfilled in this place.
          But yet there is time.
“As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way, and live”.
“All that come unto Me, I will in no wise cast out”.
“For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble, and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of Hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch”.
“For our God is a consuming fire”.
Ask Him to enter into your poor heart today. He has said that He stands at the door and knocks, and if any man hears His voice and opens the door, He will come in, and stay.
Imagine having God Himself inside you.
“Great peace have they which love Thy law, and nothing shall offend them”.
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away”.

        • Fr.Duffy Fighting 69th

I just love it when reprobates try and tell christians what it means to be christian, just because we tell you unpleasant things about the state of your souls. Quit winning. God does love and care about EVERY soul. But he also will discipline His children when they go astray. However Auto Exec, you have God-given free will, and you have chosen your path. Good luck with that when you stand naked in judgement before Our Lord Jesus Christ.

      • Pix

        “Don’t use Christian terms.”

Christianity is pagan Mithraism wearing a new name. If you don’t want atheists to use Christian terms, then atheists don’t want Christians using pagan terms like Christ, baptism, the last supper, Christmas, Easter, Halloween. etc etc.

        • MSG Chicken

Those are the false believers that have taken up the Christian name. Lot more complicated than you think. I think it’s called truth. Are you familiar with that?

      • MSG Chicken

        FR Duffy,

Ghost is a new guy here. Found BIN with his pants down and typical of these amateurs they get all excited that they may be the only genius here.

This is all old stuff to me. See all the time. Over time he should ripen to a nice smelly tomato.

    • Mister Fred

Kinda funny… it seems that atheists talk more about God than most Christians do…
They already have someone who does this under the guise of Christianity… His name is Joel Olsteen… lol

I’m a Christian, but this is America… As far as I’m concerned the atheists can do whatever they want….It doen’t bother me… But everyone must have that same freedom under the constitution. So if you are granted the same freedom, don’t deny others that same freedom, or expect yours to be dissolved in return.. But remember…. Christians… Atheists… We are both still equally Infidels in the eyes of the forces opposing our nation.

      • JustAComment

” it seems that atheists talk more about God than most Christians do ”

Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

        • Mister Fred

JustAComment…. ” it seems that atheists talk more about God than most Christians do ”
          It is a sad truth….

        • JustAComment

Yes, but the point I was trying to make is that, just as the Holy Spirit works in the world, operates in the hearts and minds of those of faith, there are dark spiritual forces that work in the world and come forth from people so disposed. This is why there’s all the anger and venom. Like you, I really don’t get exercised the least over atheists having their “churches.” This is the world, nothing new going on. But the fact is, the opponents of Christ are exercised against Him, this even in the Bible and very strong evidence the reality of what they’re upset over, usually not even knowing what’s actually operating on their hearts and minds. I like to think of a Shakespeare quote, when I see all the fomenting and gnashing of teeth going on in the anti-God community, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.” The devil wouldn’t be fighting, if there was nothing to fight.

        • JustAComment

Think about it. How much time do you spend on atheist websites, or seeking atheist articles, or pagan articles to spew against? I’ve done this a sum total of zero in my life. I don’t even know if there are these places on the web. But go to Christian forums and websites, or articles addressing some aspect of faith, and how many crazed people, atheists, false prophets, just evil people in a lather, are spewing some form of destruction? I neither go to websites where Santa Claus or Grimm’s fairy tales are topical, witchcraft or astrology, as I don’t believe in these things, have no desire to hang around something I don’t believe in, waste my time just spewing venom, not living in anger against people that believe nonsense in the first place, so why, oh why, do atheists feel the need to spend their lives convulsing over something they say doesn’t exist, that is irrelevant to them? Some of them seem to spend all their time hanging around Christians. They’d do well to ask themselves these questions, actually. Again, it is so very clear, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

        • Mister Fred

Agreed… I think that I spend more time on stuff that is invading or infecting (false prophets etc…) vs. stuff that poses no threat… This article just caught my attention when I was scanning through..

    • JustAComment

When it comes down to it, atheists have every right to their own “churches.” Of the greatest aspects of the U.S. framework have been freedom of speech and freedom of religion, and the world has seen quite enough crime in mixing corrupted religion and government in its history. Among theistic religions, at least the true Christianity of the Bible has never been a faith of compulsion. One freely believes or rejects the gospel. Christ never compelled anything, and God has no interest in robots. While one can well argue against the atheistic point of view, if this is what a person chooses, that person is no less free to live whatever their faith is, the consequences in a “live and let live” framework, as God intended us, a personal matter. Ultimate judgment is the Lord’s and the Lord’s only. Neither is gratuitous mockery called for: it’s one thing to argue one’s faith or rebuke error, another to simply go on vile, emotional tirades of vulgar name calling against others. As a Christian, I’ve experienced a few lifetimes worth of such treatment, so I think Christians, of all people, should realize how wrong this is. And finally, though it will never happen, I’d prefer people, some of whom are active enemies of Christians, to hang out in their own space, and not in the Christian congregation, though the tares are sown with the wheat. In any case, it behooves all of us who’d name Jesus Christ to make our best effort to,

      Luke 6

31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
32 “But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.
35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.
36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.”

Remember that we all put our pants on the same way, and Christians were all once the same as atheists in our standing with God,

      Ephesians 2

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

    • Thane36425

Straight out of Hannah Arendt’s “Totalitarianism.”

The people are lonely and isolated, feeling like their lives are lacking meaning and purpose. Since they have been trained to question or even hate traditional religion, they seek something else. That something else is usually politics or some faction that supports progressive (read: totalitarian) ends. These groups will give them that sense of belonging and “doing something.” Most won’t bother to look any further than the partying and camaraderie to see what is really going on. Eventually it might dawn on them, but then most will not turn away because their egos won’t let them admit they were wrong and to walk away means leaving the group and being alone again and they certainly won’t risk that.

    • Jeff Brown

Why do Atheist find it so hard to believe in God?? There are countless millions of testimonies given by people that know the Lord Jesus. Even Muslims are being converted to Christ by the thousands; finding a new life that they didn’t know that they could have. Stop being defensive. Give your self a break. Put your faith in Jesus and live forever.

This does not make sense, why would atheist need a church, why would they call it one.???? Maybe a gathering, but not a church. I have known Atheist exist everywhere and heard their pitiful voices try to explain away God. What ever their reasoning is for it is of great danger to their health, have they read (23 minute in hell) by Bill Wise. That is good enough for me not to never ever go there and I mean never. I guess it is faith in the knowing all is safe with the Lord, it is personal.

Again, Jesus never wrote a word with the human language, a human construct that never got to the Heart that matters.
Love, Understanding and Touch, the Right way heals by design.
Does one really need a human being at an alter deciphering a book of words Down to flock of sheep?
Always found that strange as a child though had the tendency to speak Up when something’sounded’ astray from da-trooth.

In ‘The temple on the mount’ speech, on the other hand, right 1, was well recorded throughout history.
The corrupt king of Israel at that time was always made the fool when he attempted to debate Jesus. Though Jesus was betrayed in the end, all suffered by design though it was never the End as the Soul Is Eternal/Immortal and a-part of the Creator. One’s elecromagnetic field, aura, halo and so forth is what is Of the Creator, not the flesh shell it came in. In the book of Enoch, it was recorded that Jesus emphasized the concept of re-incarnation so folks may understand their Life is but a journey towards the development of their Beeing.

Reincarnation, from ‘I’ understand takes place at the first spark or beat of the heart or one may get a second chance in the same shell as in an OBE or out of body experience or NDE, or near death experience. I have an Uncle who has been declared technically dead on at least 3 occasions. I prayed hard for his Re-cover-Y as he was/Is very important to me. Thank God he recovered and is still with us today.

As in MichelAngelo’s Sistene chapel painting reveals the Spark of Creation and/or Enlightenment.
The next Golden Age could be…..or not though freewill, complemented by the Conscience is sure to get one closer to Ascension and boldly go where no? man /Soul has gone before :

From what I understand, when one encounters their CreatOr, they either want to Jump in the Arms or off a Cliff, so to ‘say’.
