Yemen: The world’s newest humanitarian catastrophe, and how Britain helped to create it

http://www.infowars.com/yemen-the-worlds-newest-humanitarian-catastrophe-and-how-britain-helped-to-create-it/

by David Wearing | Middle East Eye

Britain has actively contributed to the creation a humanitarian disaster in Yemen, and potentially helped turn the Middle East’s poorest state into the new Syria. Not hyperbole or rhetoric, just a bald statement of fact. I’ll leave it to others to try to explain the near total silence on this issue throughout the British media and across the political spectrum. For now, it will suffice simply to tell the story.

This week the UN declared its highest level of humanitarian emergency in Yemen, with more than 21.1 million people (over 80 per cent of the population) in need of aid, 9.4 million with little or no access to water, and 13 million facing “a food security crisis” as the country teeters on the brink of famine. A fortnight ago the World Health Organisation confirmed an outbreak of potentially lethal dengue fever as a result of the general collapse of the state, civilian infrastructure and health services, with over 3,000 cases recorded since March. The total number of internally displaced people has now reached a million, with a quarter of a million made refugees.

Aid agencies have placed the blame primarily on a coalition led by Saudi Arabia, including the likes of Qatar, the UAE and Egypt, and backed by the US and UK, whose air campaign and naval blockade have dramatically worsened the situation in an already desperately impoverished country. The assault began in late March, when the Saudis and their allies waded into a civil conflict on the side of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi against the northern Houthi rebel movement. It is a case of the wealthiest Arab states joining forces to bomb and starve the poorest, with the assistance of two of the world’s richest and most powerful countries.

From the start, Whitehall pledged to back the Saudis “in every practical way short of engaging in combat”. This has involved ongoing logistical and technical support to the Saudi air force (which operates twice as many UK-built jets as the RAF), as well as the continued supply of munitions, while Royal Navy liaison officers work alongside their Saudi counterparts enforcing the blockade….read it all here.….Since last week’s atrocity at a beach resort in Tunisia, politicians and commentators have been discussing how the British state can best tackle the problem of terrorism in the Middle East. Well here’s one suggestion. Stop fuelling it, and stop participating in it.

Aden Int’l Airport under Full Control of Yemeni Army, Ansarullah Forces

A senior leader of the Ansarullah revolutionary
forces underlined that the international airport of Aden is under the
full control of the Yemeni Army and popular forces, adding that false
news over the fall of the airport is only the product of the Saudis’
psychological war against his country.

Seyed
Hossein al-Houthi told FNA that the news by the Saudi media claiming
the fall of the Aden international airport is sheer lie.
“After heavy failures of Al Saudi in Aden battle,
the Saudi forces have embarked on psychological war against the Yemenis
to weaken their sprit,” he further added.
“The images of a Saudi C-130 airplane in Aden airport, published by the Saudi media, are fake,” Houthi said.

On Thursday, Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a member of
Ansarullah movement’s political bureau, rejected reports circulated
through some media outlets claiming that forces loyal to fugitive former
Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi have captured Aden.
Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said that pro-Hadi militants
have not been able to take complete control of the strategic Southern
Yemeni port city, which is situated 346 kilometers (214 miles) South of
the capital, Sana’a, despite Saudi Arabia’s incessant airstrikes to help
them gain the upper hand over Ansarullah fighters.
Bukhaiti further said that heavy clashes between
fighters from his group and militants over the control of Aden are in
full swing.
The senior Ansarullah official went on to say that
key positions in Aden are still being controlled by Yemeni army
troopers and fighters from allied Popular Committees, adding that they
are pushing ahead to drive pro-Hadi gunmen out of Aden.
Bukhaiti also said Saudi Arabia has reaped nothing
from its deadly aerial campaign against Yemen, and has instead suffered
huge losses.
Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen for 121 days
now to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of
Riyadh.
Hadi stepped down in January and refused to
reconsider the decision despite calls by Ansarullah revolutionaries of
the Houthi movement.
Despite Riyadh’s claims that it is bombing the
positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening
residential areas and civilian infrastructures.
The Monarchy’s attacks have so far claimed the lives of at least 5,178 civilians, mostly women and children.

Yemeni People Hold Massive Rally in Sana’a to Condemn Continued Saudi Aggressions

Tens of thousands of Yemenis poured to the streets
of the capital, Sana’a, to denounce Saudi Arabia’s ongoing attacks on
their country.

The Yemeni
people from all walks of life marched towards Sana’a's Central Square
while they were chanting slogans against Saudi Arabia’s massacre of
civilians across their country, Yemen’s Arabic-language al-Masyra TV
reported Friday.
The protesters urged the international bodies to break their silence on the continued Saudi aggression.
The protesters said they will support “strategic
decisions” by Ansarullah movement in the face of Riyadh’s breach of
repeated agreements on establishing a ceasefire.
